I flew up to Auburn yesterday.
When I got to the airport, I couldn't find the keys. I looked all over for
the keys. I even drove back home to see if I left the keys there. Nope.
Back to the airport. I finally found them where I had put them so I wouldn't
lose them.
Then, the starter wouldn't engage. Oh, it spun nicely, it just wouldn't
engage. I squirted some penetrating lube into the starter opening. I did the
best I could, shooting through the gap between the spinner and the cowling.
I tried several more times and nothing. I sat there, made some calls on my
cell. Tried a few more times. Then, finally, the starter engaged and the
engine started.
I flew up to Auburn to meet with the airport manager about the hangar spot I
wanted. The manager wasn't there because his wife needed emergency surgery.
So, I flew to Grass Valley to check out the spot I looked at up there. The
airport manager in GV was not there either.
So, I headed home.
As the sun began to set, and it got darker and darker, I turned on the
lights. The instrument panel lights didn't come on. I checked the fuse. It
was
blown. I looked all over to find fuses. Since the plane had a JPI 700
with oil temp, I stole the oil temp fuse. By now, it was dark enough to see
that at least the right nav light was on. All the strobes worked. I tried the
panel lights again. Still nothing. But, now, the right nav light was out.
What fuse to steal this time? No glove box in this Tiger so I searched the
side pockets. Ah, Ha. a pack of fuses. I tried one. Nothing. I
checked the fuse against the light from my cell phone. It was blown. I got
another fuse. This time I checked to see if the 'new' fuse was any good.
Nope. Neither was the next one. Or the next one. Or the next one. The next
fuse was good. Cool. At least I had one nave light that I knew of for
sure.
For the next 45 minutes, I flew by the light of my cell phone held up against
the instruments. No. The map light didn't work either. What genius
connected the nav lights to the instrument panel lights? And fuses. I know
there are SOME advantages to a fuse, but fumbling with them in the dark isn't one
of them.
I didn't find a flashlight in the plane either. I didn't bring my
flashlight because this plane seemed to be one that had been well taken care of.
Next
time.
Gary

When you're done with my annual and the wing tank feel free to fly to Auburn
for a day or two in N72T if you need to and you can drop the plane off for
me at SQL and I'll run you home (on a Sat. or Sun. though). I know that my
panel lights worked when I dropped the plane off for you and I have a glove
box with fuses;)
