Any more news to come on this (e.g. additional performance data, photos,
additional installations, etc.)?

Lycoming installation. The in use picture is on a 79 Tiger and I made it for
my 77 Cheetah. I'm pretty certain it will work on all Lycoming installations
including the 540's. I had thought the wrench was a Snap On but it is
actually a MAC. The wrench is 12 point as the angle of movent is limited.
Cut the notch with a die grinder with a small wheel (ie worn) as to not cut
both sides of the 7/16 box. Leave enough material to just clear the stud.
This retains adequate strength of the wrench for the intended job. This is
really worth cutting up the wrench (and forfetting possible waranty). It
works really well and turns what was once a real pain into something simple.
The next person that removes the pump that is unaware of the tool will not
be happy though

I have a couple of pictures. When I get the rest of them, I'll get them on
my web site.
The owner is very happy with the installation. The factory and the Type
Certificate Data Sheet gives 2800 rpm as the red line. The factory confirmed
that the 2500 rpm red-line was a requirement for Germany. They indicated that
the prop could be manually selected for 2700 rpm if that is what you wanted
and it wouldn't do any harm to the prop. They also indicated a possible
modification so the engine can turn 2700 rpm using the controller.

I have this tool. The bent one Jim described.
You still can't turn it enough to do any good. I've made tools to get the
vacuum pump off and they are only marginally better. I've also tried the one
bent at a 90 degree angle at the base. it isn't any better either.
Removing the mag takes a couple of seconds. It's certainly a lot easier than
fooling with various tools that can only turn the nut less than 1/6 of a turn at
a
time.

I can't imagine taking the mag off in lieu of using this tool. This would also
bring on the task of mag timing. I only use the tool to break the nut loose and
to torque the new lock washer / nut. If it's needed beyond that due to run-down
friction, then the nut needs to be replaced or the stud needs to be cleaned
up or replaced. It's not difficult to spin the nut by hand if you're on a step
ladder and accessing it from the top.

That's the plan. I've had it on two Travelers. I haven't flown it on a
Traveler yet. The way the cowling attaches needs to be changed. Plus, the
source for carb air needs to be sorted out on Travelers and Cheetahs.

I was just reading the TCDS for Cheetahs and Tigers and learned something
very interesting.
The engine in the Cheetah is an O230-E2G which puts out 150 hp at 2700 rpm.
and
the operating limit for the O360-A4K in a Tiger is 2700 rpm and 1800 hp.
Based on that, it looks like a 200 hp engine in a Tiger is within the Type
Design.
Ya gotta love the FAA. They won't let you call the high compression
O320-E2G a 160 hp, but they can publish the most significant part of the aircraft
certification with obvious errors.

I need a dimmer switch as soon as possible.
Does anyone have the specs for the rheostat?
watt rating?
Current rating?
Ohm rating?

Gary... it was discussed recently in the GG list. You can check the
archives.... but...
It's a pretty high wattage device (50W?) and they just don't seem to make
them any more...
I searched all of my electronics catalogs and couldn't find any with that
high a wattage. Even found some on-line places that deal with antiques
radios... they had rheostats, but not high watts and low ohms...
Go to a modern, up-to-date switching device that will run MUCH cooler in
operation...
....gil in Tucson, but Tiger in Bakersfield...:
