I'd invited Bill Crum to our Euroepean Grumman Fly-In - he has come back to
basically say: - Sorry, can't come -no one is going anywhere!

That's really too bad. As I Tiger owner I love them but there are other
very good aircraft out there doing more innovation to attract customers. I
also read today the Diamond has the Avidyne stuff certified in the DA40 now
along with the Garmin G1000 stuff they certified a short time back. Cirrus
has Avidyne too. I really think that Tiger needs to sweaten the price on
the airframe enough (hopefully they can find a way) to make room for some of
these new Avionics packages. Mooney is using basically a 40 year old
airframe that's still performance competitive (you don't have to be
composite) but by updating the avionics they still have an attractive
package. Tiger has to push the envelope a bit more somewhere...
Make people choose between a 25 year old proven airframe with competitive
avionics for $220-230K and the newer composite airframes with similar
avionics for $250+ rather than the 25 year old proven airframe with somewhat
dated avionics ( I'm actually calling a 430 dated, and I have one, shame on
me :-( ) for $220-230K.
My prices may be a little inaccurate, just my recollection from what I've
read over the last year but you get the drift. Flame away:)
Jamey
Happy owner of 1979 AA5B N72T which he didn't pay $220K for.

It was inevitable in both cases:
a> Because there are very few A&P and FAA types that are familiar with the
new (FINALLY) technology. Composition and ballistic chutes just to name two.
b> There are only a finite amount of idiots. You can only sell the Brooklyn
Bridge to the same guy(s) a couple of times. Sooner or later they will learn
or be eliminated as nature takes its course.
No matter how much we love our planes; Progress is inevitable, move on,
advance or you WILL fall by the wayside. No matter how much money you throw into
our planes the technology is STILL 40 Years Old.

Gary:
Is the plane grounded or do you sand a little to see if the cracks have any
depth? Also, are gear legs available and at what cost? OUCH!

You can solder aluminum ... but it is very difficult ... but if done, I would
like to have seen the quality of work. That guy must be PDL (Pretty Damn
Lucky). The line could have also been SS or Steel.

If you are referring to the gear leg, well, it won't be flying again. It is
very badly cracked.
By-the-way, the hardware on the nose hear was installed with the thrust
washers and everything else on the outside. The nose fork was full of water,
badly rusted, and the bearings in the nose fork are worn to the point where=20the
fork rocks about 1/4 inches at the gear attach location. It will need a new
nose strut. This is the second nose strut/fork I've seen in a couple of months
that has had the hardware improperly installed. Also, it appears the axle
(nose gear) had broken or failed at some point. There is a serious skid mark
in the INSIDE of the nose gear fairing, the entire bottom of the fairing had
been reglassed, in-place. The front had been glassed so far back that the=20nut
could not be removed without busting out the fiberglass. Classy. Some
people should not be allowed to own planes.
When all is said and done, this plane will have all new wheel fairings, new
brake covers, new sump covers, a new main gear leg, and a new nose strut.
It could use a Tiger air box (used) in good condition....
This is the plane I removed wasps nests from last year.

Oh, and new brake lines on both sides, rebuilt slave cylinders (that's brake
calipers for those of you who are politically correct), new brakes, a new tire
( the bad gear leg made the alignment so bad it wore out a new tire in 2
years), and many hours that I don't charge for just fixing things like bad wire
routing, securing hoses, replacing SCAT tubing, fixing the sir box.
Oh, yea, 10 of the wings access covers were so badly corroded, dented, holes
pulled through, that I'll be replacing them. And, it's getting a new tail
cone. The tail-cone taht's on it is full of some sort of epoxy to hold it
together. unfortunately, the plastic was never properly prepared and the cracks
are still cracks.
Like I always say, "If a job isn't worth doing, it isn't worth doing twice."
