Hello Folks,
I'm a new pilot (license 1/4/04) with 100 hours based in Tenn. (TRI). All
training was in a 172. I'm now the proud owner of a '75 Tiger N74026 and
have about 11 hours total in the Tiger and having an absolute blast. As a
new pilot and plane owner, I have been doing LOTS of reading and learning
and would first like to say how much I value and appreciate all the good
information on this list. That being said, there are a few questions I
have I'm hoping some of you kind folks can help me with.
1. Oil: My engine is a new Lycoming factory rebuild and I'm still
breaking it in. Total time since rebuild is approximately 20 hours and
the oil usage has stabilized and hasn't used any oil in the past 4 - 5
hours. I plan on changing the oil this weekend (going to regular oil
rather than mineral oil). My question is regarding the oil filter. The
current filter is CH 48110-1, however I've noted some people are using CH
48111 which looks to be about 2 inches longer. Are these two filters
interchangeable with no problem? If so, I'd like to use the 48111 as I
assume the bigger filter may do a better job of cleaning/cooling the oil.
Is this correct or am I off base?
2. Auto-Gas: O.K, I know this is a touch subject. My understanding is
there is an STC for the O-360-A4K and an STC for the AA5A, but no STC for
the combo of AA5B with the O-360-A4K. It appears to me the only reason
there is no STC for the Tiger's is there simply isn't a large enough
market to make it financially viable. Assuming there was an STC, I also
understand it is simply a piece of paper with absolutely no modifications
to the airframe or powerplant. Is this accurate? If so, I would prefer
to run 93 octane (91 minium) mogas when possible as I've been told this is
actually better for the engine and won't cause as much plug fowling due to
the lead content in 100LL (not to mention 30%+ savings on fuel). My
question to the gang is how common is it for Tiger owners to use MoGas
(answer this one directly to me rather than on list).
3. In the spirit of getting the cart before the horse... I need to locate
a good Grumman savvy mechanic in the area. Is any one aware of a good A&P
near East Tennessee or at least with in a couple of hours flying distance?
There are a few good mechanics in my area, but none are Grumman savvy.
Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

> Look at the oil filters on a new car. They are about the size of a short
soda can. The shorter 48110-1 is fine. Change the oil every 25 hours WITH
the filter. I recommend 15w-50. Lots of controversy here. Latest corrosion
testing shows it's better.

> The only trouble with auto gas is that it's formulated to be used where you
buy it. The Reed vapor pressure of the auto gas is not suitable for the high
altitudes and high temps seen in airplanes. I had a customer call and say=20he
was stuck in Death Valley. His engine wouldn't run very well. He had
flown to Death Valley from Reno on auto gas. I told him to transfer all the auto
gas to one tank and fill the other with AvGas. That worked. I'm not a
believer in auto gas.
Plus, There is some concern over the sealnat in the tank deteriorating with
auto gas.
