TG,
I noticed yesterday that the lower engine mount attach bolts on both the
left and right sides touch the bottom cowl and apparently have been rubbing
over the years. There is some wear evident on the inside of the cowl just
below the end of the bolts. My mechanic and I tried putting more washers
under the bolt head to raise the height of the bolts, in order to increase
the distance, but with enough washers to get the necessary clearance, the
castle nut on the bottom won't give enough room for the cotter pin. I
suggested that we could invert the bolts (with the nut on top of the mount
bracket) but my mechanic said that's not recommended just in case something
shears (stating that the bolt could work its way out from vibration, since
the bolt head would be on the bottom). The parts manual lists AN6-21 bolts,
which is what I have (we measured them) but they're too long. I asked
whether or not its legal to use shorter bolts to increase the clearance. He
said, not exactly, but in order to keep the bolt end from chafing the lower
cowl, we could try something shorter.
Just looking for some guidance. Thanks.
Steven Jackson

Gary .. this came from the Sacramento SkyRanch web site...
"Lycoming do not publish the valve lift figures but I can tell you that it is!
Should be 0.30296\" plus or minus 0.002\" "
This is for a O-320-H2AD .. my O-320 parts manual doesn't cover this
version, but you might be able to compare part numbers...

Order the right bolts from Fletcher. Someone put in what they had instead
of putting in the right part.
Gee, I never saw that before.
Seriously, I see SOOOO many wrong parts it isn't even funny.

Subject: Time Sensitive Announcement
From: P-38 National Association <staff@p38assn.org>
Hello, P-38 Supporters:
Just a quick note to let those of you who live in the
Southern California area know that there will be a
P-38 fly-in to Bob Hope Airport (BUR) this Tuesday, April 20.
Here is an article about the event, written by Bill Worford
of the Antelope Valley Press. There will be massive
television and press coverage at this event, and it's
a rare opportunity for you to see the P-38 in the air.
-------------
Antelope Valley Press
Friday, April 16, 2004
History will be made and a dream fulfilled next week at Bob Hope Airport
in Burbank when a Lockheed-built World War II P-38 Fighter returns to
its place of origin -- with none other than the Valley's Flora Belle
Reece on board.
The flight will mark the 60th anniversary of the delivery of the 5,000th
P-38 from Lockheed Burbank. It also serves to promote the P-38 National
Convention scheduled to take place next month in Southern California.
Flora Belle Reece will be achieving a 60-year dream. A WWII pilot with
the Women's Air Force Service Pilots, or WASPS, Reece flew many
different aircraft during the war. The women pilots relieved the men in
noncombat missions, so the men could be free to fly combat missions.
But Reece -- who married after the war, became a mother of three, taught
school and performed missionary work -- always wanted to fly in a P-38.
Tuesday she'll accompany pilot Steve Hinton as he guides the P-38
Lightning into the airport for landing.
The return of the P-38 ceremonies and fly-in are set for Tuesday from 1
to 4 p.m. at Mercury Air Center, 10750 Sherman Way, Burbank. Information
is available by calling (888) 367-7380 or writing
keepem.flyin@verizon.net <mailto:keepem.flyin@verizon.net>.

Hope to see you there!

Subject: | Tiger Update (Les Staples, are you on TeamGrumman?) |
--> TeamGrumman-List message posted by: TeamGrumman@aol.com
I pulled the cylinders and pistons. I inspected the cam and lifters
visually. They look remarkably good. The baffle that wraps around #4 was missing.
Consequently, #4 piston and cylinder have been run VERY hot. The pistons
and rings were cooked. At approximately 15 hours in the last 5 years, I'm
lucky. Had this been run a lot longer without the baffle, it could have been
a
lot worse.
I decided to mic the cam using a dial indicator. Here is where things get
interesting. I called Lycon and found that the cam is nominally 0.350 inch
lift. Before I measured the lobe height with a dial indicator, I removed all
the lifter parts, cleaned everything with solvent, dried them, and put them all
back together.
Now, without the specs for the cam going in, I can't tell you what it was,
but, now, it reads like this. (NOTE: I measured the right side, #'s 1 & 3,
first)
1I: 0.350 (So, I felt pretty good about this.)
1E: 0.3535 (OK, so, it was a little taller, I can live with that.)
3I: 0.351 (OK, close enough)
3E: 0.372 (SAY WHAT? I measured this about a dozen times. I also had
2 other people verify how I was measuring and duplicated the measurement
between 0.366 and 0.372
2I: 0.355
2E: 0.357
4I: 0.355
4E: 0.358 to 0.360
Now for the weird thing. #1 intake (0.350) and #2 intake (0.355) share
the same lobe. So, even after measuring the two together several times, #1
was always about 0.005 less. Bent cam?
Also, #3 intake (0.351) and #4 intake (0.355) share the same lobe. Same
thing. It's weird. Can you just picture two guys who have built numerous
motors and one machinist looking at this and wondering just how in the hell
the measurements can be different from one side to the other on the same cam
lobe?
Tomorrow I am going to order:
1) new Lycoming cylinders and pistons, ported and polished by LyCon
2) JPI 700
3) New lightweight starter, the high torque model, from Les Staples.
4) plus a few odds and ends from Fletcher.
Gary

Gary .. any difference has to be in the lifters.
... perhaps one wasn't quite bottoming out??
