--> TeamGrumman-List message posted by: TeamGrumman@aol.com I got a call several months ago from a guy asking about the paperwork I used to get a field approval for a Stewart Warner 8406 oil cooler for my Cheetah. I sent him that data I used. I didn't have the signed off 337 because it went with the Cheetah when I sold it; one of those things I forgot to do before I sold it. Anyway. The guy called me today saying his mechanic was doing the installation. He asked if he needed a field approval. I told him that was the path I used and that I expected he'd have to do the same. Then, later today I got another call from him saying that he needed the signed off 337 for approved data. I told him that I didn't keep a copy. He then said the FAA inspector (FSDO, I presume.) was there and wanted to talke to me. When he got on the phone he started yelling at me saying he'd submitted paperwork that didn't have a field approval stamp on it. I explained that the signed off 337 went with the plane and he started yelling saying that the paperwork I sent the guy was worthless and in the future if I wanted to help someone I should supply the correct paperwork. I asked if I could get a field approval with the paperwork I supplied, why couldn't the guy wanting to do the same. He started yelling at me again and I started yelling back, "HEY, HEY, HEY, settle down. Then he put the guy back on the phone. Why is it that people hired by the FAA have to be a%&holes? It's like they have no ability to think though a problem and come to a solution if it hasn't already been done before. Like, requiring approval to put an FAA approved aircraft size 25 battery in a certified plane that requires a size 25 battery just because the new battery wasn't on the type certificate. And, it wasn't on the TCDS only because the technolgy didn't exist when the TCDS was written. What, pray tell, rationalization is needed to solve this problem? None. But I digress.

--> TeamGrumman-List message posted by: Anna3003@aol.com out of Mojave. I understand the airport will be closed, but they will allow cars to park starting at 3 am. Take off is scheduled for 6:30 am but who knows when he will actually take off. what would be a good nearby airport to fly to on Sunday, get a motel and a car for an early start to Mojave? I'm asking Gary because he's familiar with all the airstrips in that locale. Might be a grumman fly-in possibility-anyone else interested in GA in outer space?

Flew in there last weekend for lunch and gusting, windy landing practice. If I wasn't going to be in ... Alaska ... on business I'd think about heading up there. -----Original Message----- From: owner-teamgrumman-list-server@matronics.com [mailto:owner-teamgrumman-list-server@matronics.com] On Behalf Of Anna3003@aol.com Subject: TeamGrumman-List: rutan's plane flys on the 21st Jun --> TeamGrumman-List message posted by: Anna3003@aol.com out of Mojave. In 8 years with the Corps, I've noticed that civilian government employees, at least the ones in management positions, are power trippers. I do a lot of work with our range control on base, specifically dealing with conflicts between the airliners and the R-2501 airspace. I traveled up to Palmdale and talked to the lady that runs L.A. Center. I asked her a question about RVSM and whether or not that would reduce the traffic over a specific jet route that cuts across the base and causes us much consternation. Anyway, she didn't even know what RVSM stood for, much less the answer to my question. She just launched into some (I presumed) oft used sermon on how the "FAA act of 1957 mandates that U.S. airspace belongs to the American citizenry, and the FAA was appointed as the steward of that airspace"...blah, blah, blah...ad nauseum. Nice to know that the person in charge up there is so in tune with the controllers that keep planes from swapping paint. She was probably never a controller anyway, and your FAA conversationalist was probably never a mechanic in the field... Steven Jackson '75 AA-1B N1434R L22 Yucca Valley, CA
