Yes, =a= rigging fixture is specified to be used by the Service Manual procedure, thus excluding the Mark-1 Eyeball alone. > I know that ideally, I'd use the fixtures, but since the only > place to get them is Fletchair, Not so, rigging fixtures are not a Sole Source Entity as so many other parts are, "only from Fletchair". Maybard Crosby has a set left over from his Dealer Days, and has indicated that he'll rent 'em out like Fletchair does. One might try asking him at: maynardccrosby@earthlink.net But a fixture is just a fixture, a frame to transpose measures and such from one place to another. The Service Manual photo in Fig 5-3 is clear enough to illustrate what is already perceived as a "big protractor" by the spec talking about angles. > I thought I would see if you can do the job properly without > the rigging fixtures... It most certainly CAN be done without =THE= rigging fixtures from Fletchair Tool Rental. Making your own fixture out of cardboard sheets (one time use?) or any lightweight material on-hand is both possible and adequate. No need at all to spend any $$-bucks on such a simple item. A few hints maybe less obvious: 1) the center point of the big protractor is the center of the elevator torque tube at the front of the elevator, the point around which the elevator rotates. 2) the zero-degree starting point is the extended chord line of the elevator and horizontal stabilizer as-one chord w/o "bend" from the elevator trailing edge through the pivot-point center of the elevator torque tube and on to the center of the leading edge of the horizontal stabilizer. A "rigging fixture" for this need be no more complex than a straight edge (ruler) held at arms' length and sighted from abeam the tail as making that chord line from the center of the leading edge, thru the torquetube center and onto the trailing edge... ? A straight line scored across a scrap piece of Lexan or Plexi (or cheap acrylic) would be nifty and work well for "setting" that point in the center of the torque tube. Nothing wrong with KISS and using the stuff ya got. Personally, I think it might be a good and useful Service to the community if someone having a Web Site would post some line drawings detailing the simple nature of a rigging fixture. This is not to compromise or intrude on Fletch's efforts to "make a buck", nor to "cost them business". It is such a simple item, a fixture, charging so much to rent it out is a bit --- overdone, perhaps ? OTOH, in these days of Sue 'Em, attempting to disseminate such information my pose a threat of subsequent liability. <sigh> Even the simple stuff has to get complicated ?
