      Name Change:

The term SLAG is not the proper term for what we are discussing. The proper
      term is FLASHING.

SLAG is the waste material that is separated out in a smelting, forging or
casting process. It is what comes to the top of the crucible. It contains
impurities, and dissimilar material that have not combined with the pour material.

It is skimmed off the top and thrown into a pile called a Slag Heap.

FLASHING is the squeezing or oozing out of the poured material around the
joints where parting lines of the mold are joined together.

You are 100% correct Gary. But I did not think we were talking about the low
      life's at Lycoming.

I tried describing the 'flashing' between the fins to a Grumman owner and he
just stared at me with the deer-in-the-headlight look. THen he said, "What
flashing? I thought flashing was something on a roof to channel water."
Then I told him, "You know, the excess slag between the fins when they cast=20the
cylinder head." He knew immediately about what I was talking.
