The proper term is FLASHING. SLAG is the waste material that is separated out in a smelting, forging or casting process. It is what comes to the top of the crucible. It contains impurities, and dissimilar material that have not combined with the pour material. It is skimmed off the top and thrown into a pile called a Slag Heap. FLASHING is the squeezing or oozing out of the poured material around the joints where parting lines of the mold are joined together.
