It's original purpose was as a load resister for the flashing beacon. The
load had to be dumped somewhere during the beacon "off" time. You can remove
everything related to it.

That resistor is necessary for the Aeroflash power supply to work properly.
It enables the flash to "flash" when only one bulb is connected to the
supply. If two bulbe are used, the second bulb takes the place of the resistor.
The resistor is part of an R-C circuit.
