My tach (the second for my '79) was beginning to read high (more than 100 rpm), so I decided it was time to replace. I considered a new Mitchel, which could be painted with the correct markings, and set to my actual aircraft TT as well as lighted for about $300. The other option was to go digital for about $400. Additional for installation of both. I decided to have the shop which painted my plane do the installation since they are a full service (but not Grumman) shop, and I had to go there anyway to discuss some touch-up work. I thought I was doing them a "favor" by giving them the business and thought it was a relatively straight-forward operation. WRONG!!! The guy took over 6hrs to install the unit, and nearly disassembled my panel completely! While there IS a lot of stuff in the panel (previous owner installed), the final bill was out of control. Lesson learned - stick with knowledgeable mechanics/avionics shops! Anyway, I do really like the unit, because of the accurate digital readout, and other features. The other features are: - You can "zero" the tach when doing your run-up, and get a direct read-out of RPM drop, e.g. -70 on left, -40 on right (my typical experience) - It records only time above 1200rpm, which I believe has reduced my average tach time a bit - nice when facing the (dumb) 100hr aileron check - It records max rpm - sometimes nice to know - Easily readable day/night - Was delivered with my actual aircraft TT - nice since the old (replacement) tach was reading about 570 hrs, while my actual TT was about 1265 hrs - makes it easier for logbook entries. Got the tach from Cliff - good price and quick delivery direct from the factory, thanks Cliff! Happy to answer questions anyone may have.
