Subject: | Move to Auburn-Grass Valley (update) |
--> TeamGrumman-List message posted by: TeamGrumman@aol.com
On Tuesday, I rented a 12 foot trailer, loaded 90% of my household items, and
drove it all to Auburn. It's around 400 miles from here. I got most of it
moved into my apartment in Auburn. The items that didn't fit into the
apartment I moved to a T-hangar in Grass Valley.
While I was loading the excess into the T-Hangar, Rusty Hamer, my neighbor
behind me (and, apparently, one of the investors in the 8-hangar development)
came by to say Hi. Nice enough guy. He was very (I think overly, but, then,
I don't know the politics in Grass Valley) concerned that I might do
maintenance in my T-hangar. His big concern is that the fire-marshall might drop
by
and see chemicals in the hangar. He also seemed concerned about doing
maintenance in a hangar that was not on a lease to do maintenance. Of course,
when I went to see his hangar, it was clear that he did maintenance in his
hangar. As do the other two guys in the two other open hangars. When I asked
what it takes to get a maintenace approved hangar, he reacted like, "oh, well,
we
have two maintenance facilities here and they don't really want to have to
deal with any competition.
So, I called Mark Machado. Mark is the builder of the 50x80 hangar (he's
built 8 of these) I made an offer on (but it was already sold). Mark seemed
to think he knew his way around the foot dragging at Nevada County. When I
mentioned the posible resistance from the existing maintenance at NC, he said,
"Oh, yea, that could be a problem. I might be able to help you work around
it." So I called another builder in Grass Valley and was essentially told the
same thing. basically, "We don't want no stinkin competition here at Nevada
County."
Next step. I called the airport manager in Auburn (who said he might have a
hangar ready by January 1st). Currently, he says, the availability is
looking like the 15th of January. Well, I'm not holding my breath.
In the mean-time, I am moving my stuff to the hangar in GV. Who knows.
Any ideas?
Gary

On Monday night, when I was packing to move my files to Auburn, I
inadvertently packed the name and address of the guy who ordered an eyebrow.
He sent me
a check a couple of weeks ago, Dave made the eyebrow, Mike got it covered
today, and now I can't find the name and address of the guy who ordered it.
I even loaded the name and address into my computer. But, I can't remember
the name so I can't look it up.
If you're on TG, please drop me a line and let me know where to send the
eyebrow. Otherwise, i have to look for it when I get all my stuff moved to
Auburn.
Sorry for the mixup.

Gary,
It is Un-American and rampant, it is everywhere and worse.
The new mini-jetport for NASCAR at Lexington, NC (Davidson County)
has sent letters to the based-owners and hung signs on all the gates,
hangar walls, etc. in the past few months:
Only FAR Part 43, Appendix A, Maintenance
is allowed at this airport.
Their intent is to =force= the hangar and tie-down tenants to use
only their own now-open Shop. Hiring ones own mechanic to work
at the tiedown or hangar is forbidden ( as is =being= ones own
mechanic, apparently ! ) They specifically forbid doing a simple
oil change on the ramp, demanding that it be done in their Shop
hangar (by anyone is ok) =on a space-available and reasonable fee basis.
Of course, the signage does not really =say= what they think it
does, and there will be some loud shouting before it changes.
Condolences, Gary, und Velcome to Amerika, Comrade !

If the maintenance facility is the only one ther (a monopoly) and the
airport has received federal funds ..... a simple phone call to the FSDO
should alleviate the problem. You might try that even if the airport
has not received federal funds.

Gary,
I know we are all wishing you luck in getting established in Northern
California. Maybe once the local maintenance facilities understand that you
only work on
Grummans, then they will leave you alone. I can't imagine your specialty
would cause any hardship on their business. Have you seen any Grummans
based at either Auburn or Grass Valley? Keep everyone posted. Sorry I
didn't see you at Fox before you left. I feel like I've lost my "crutch".
If you plan to come through here occasionally, I'll be looking for your
plane.

Thanks for the lead Gil. I've been planning this move to Auburn-Grass
Valley for 12 years. I've spent many holidays there. This last weekend there
was a street fair in Nevada City from 6-10p. Even in the cold I'll bet there
were 5000 people wandering the streets. And, the really cool thing was, no
gang-bangers.
And, as for the heat at the AYA, anything beats cold drizzly Ohio/Wisconsin
weather.

Hi Linn,
I think there are two facilities at Nevada County doing maintenance. I thnk
they feel like they have this nice quiet little piece of paradise and don't
want outsiders in.

Rusty in Nevada County said there were 3 Grummans based there. I think
there are 3 or 4 in Auburn. I already have work lining up from the bay area....
