The newest version of the new cowling is on my plane and fitted. The next
steps are to block sand it out, clean up the little flaws in the gel coat,
paint the inside, paint the outside, mask of and paint the stripes to match=20my
plane, put on the baffle seals around the inlets, and then go fly.
Here is what is on the list of things to do. Most of these will be done on
the next cowling.
=E2=80=A2 The right inlet needs to be blended a little better in the corners.
=E2=80=A2 The upper cowling will need a different kind of stiffener along the leading
edge. This one is light but it also flexes too much.
=E2=80=A2 Examine the effect of eliminating the left cooling exit ramp. (I've
changed the nose gear boot design. The one I have now is actually a cooling air
exit ramp. It's really bitchin' and worth about 10 knots.)
=E2=80=A2 Examine making the right cooling air exit ramp variable.
Here is what developent is next.
=E2=80=A2 I am going to be putting this cowling on a 74 Traveler within the=20next
few
months. It will have a one piece upper cowling, no hinges, with an oil
filler door. It will be held in place with 13 cam locks. I'm looking for 10
knots out of this cowling on this traveler. This traveler should true out=20at
145 knots.
=E2=80=A2 I am looking at a way to incorporate an air filter into the cowling that
is
accessible from the outside. Carb air will then be ducted to the carb much
like the AG5B. Note: There will be NO air inlets on the cowling and it
won't come off the back of #3 cylinder either, or #4. I found some excess
air.....
Stay tuned for test results.
Gary
PS, my investment into this project is running in the $60,000 range....
But, then again, I spent a year trying new inlets, exit ramps, baffles, and=20such
in an attempt to find another knot of speed. That cost about $10,000.
Bottom line was, I found about one more knot. It's a good thing I am having fun.

Gary,
I'd love to see a picture of this one!

You can't have too much fun doing what you love to do!

Will the new boot fit on the old nosegear with the old cowl? I really hate
the tiger nosegear boot.

Well, not exactly. I can make a one piece unit that 'could' be bolted to
the bottom, but mine is molded in as part of the cowling. Try to figure that
one out. It only took five iterations. The cabin heat inlet,
on-the-other-hand, is in its 15th iteration. If you can possible imagine spending
all that
time on the cabin heat, I can't. Besides cabin heat, it makes the right
inlet think it's twice as big.
