Not until I get one of your new setups. Got any idea about timing and
price?

I'm going to start working on that this month. I would suspect the cost of
the cowling (in fiberglass) to be in the $7,500 range. In carbon, figure
about another $1000.

Hi Gary,
What didi you have to go thru to do something like the cowl? Did you have to
put your test bed plane in the experimental category?

Wow! $7,500 for a fiberglass cowl and $8,500 for carbon? That's more than
10% of the value of most of our planes and almost the price of a good major
O/H. That's pretty hefty. Are you pricing installed or drop-shipped? Ok,
I'm breathing again. I know you were just tossing out an initial number.
Looks good though, and can't argue with the performance gains. Waiting to
hear more.

I'm also confused about the price. I've had a LoPresti cowl for about half
that $$ for more than three years and I get 5-6 mph. I was hoping with such a
drastic redesign and lots of years invested we would at least see substantially
more speed or a reasonable price. Guess not.

LoPresti's cowl is only the nose bowl. Gary's cowl is the entire cowl from
nose bowl back to the firewall.
LoPresti's nose bowl gives no noticible speed improvement as documented by
several AYA members experiences, including the past AYA president Glen
Hadly.
Original cowls are becoming scarce. While $7500 is a lot, Gary's cowl is
probably worth a lot.

Very good point but your forgot to add that Gary's cowling looks bitch'n.
I like the detail he did w/ the landing light cover and then also how the
top cowling gets rid of those piano hinges cracking/getting loose and all of
those cowling chaffing and cracking problems. I especially hate how opening
and closing the covers on the stock cowling ends up cracking the paint and
how it gets all dented up.

Wow!
I never heard you guys believed that! We have three Tigers on the field and
we bought three cowls from LoPresti together. I have my degrees in Computer
science and Mechanical Engineering and the other guys are 1. An old time A&P and
2. A structural engineer at Rockwell. So we are very suspicious of ANY claims
and very scientific about our examinations. After quite a few before tests
under very specific conditions we ran the same tests post installation and
independently we all get 5+ mph.
I certainly don't want to engender any controversy so I'll just say we have
very different measured results. As, I guess did all the magazines that tested
the cowl. Well, that's what makes the world go round.
Your point is well taken that Gary has designed a complete cowl. Which is why
I was expecting more of a result. I guess we'll wait and see. Oh, our
cyllinder temps went down appreciably as well, but I guess you know that.
