Most people I have heard report about performance improvements say there is
little or no speed gain with the LoPresti cowl modification. 5 kts of speed
gain doesn't come easy and 10 kts is very difficult when the plane is pretty
clean to begin with. It is pretty well known in the industry that it takes
about $1000 cost per knot of aerodynamic speed gain (actually it is not
anywhere near a linear relationship). Sounds like Gary's cowling will fit
into this ballpark pretty well. BTW, have you price cowlings for other
planes lately? See how much a new lower cowling for a new Tiger would cost!

You could always spend $3,000+ for the LoPresti nose bowl, not go any faster,
and have the same cooling. But, you would have round inlets.

and, I have about $60,000 invested so far. That includes 5 different
designs.
Still going after another few knots.

Or...spend half that $7500, get improved cooling and 5-6 mph faster. Guess
it depends on who you want to believe...

Brian, are you going to the AYA in Sacto? Will you be entering the race?
(if there is one.)

Hi Gary,
I'm planning on going to Sac for the AYA this year. Can't wait! Probably
won't enter the race, because my Tiger isn't really competitive at this
point (yet, first year with it and just starting the improvements). Heck,
it still has the McCauley prop. So things like new cowls are a year or so
away. Probably long enough for you to perfect your cowl and have some ravid
users. See ya there. Brian
