Go to the web site, and check it out. It's unbelievable!!! Just enter your name, city and state to see if yours is on file. After your license comes on the screen, click the box marked "Please Remove". This will remove it from public viewing, but not from law enforcement. Please notify all your friends so they can protect themselves, too. How long does the adhesive last, that holds these planes together? How long does > the > adhesive last, that holds these planes together? > > George George, Just make sure the airplane fits your typical flight length and the size of you and your passengers. The AA1X's are fine on cabin width, but short on headroom as the canopy line is lower than with an AA5. Many people I know will simply not fit in my AA1C, but I'd say someone up to about 5' 10" would be comfortable. Past that and it depends on how thick your seats are. Also, if you have an AA1X with the typical 10 gallons of aux fuel you will likely only be legal to fly solo. Conversely, with the standard 22 gallons aboard you can take a passenger (If you and he/she are not to large), but with the 150 hp engine your endurance will be only about 1.5 hours. The handling qualities are delightful, but even with the big engine there are some things to keep in mind. Primarlily, the wing is a lower aspect ratio than the AA5 because it has less span with not much less chord. As a result, induced drag will increase quickly when the wing gets slow, so the plane will sink rapidly if you get slow on final, and possibly require large amounts of power to rectify the situation. The effeciency of the wing will also come into play in turbulence at higher altitudes and/or in the vicinity of mountain up and down drafts. In these situations, if airspeed loss is significant you may find yourself having to put the nose down and accept a temporary (hopefully) altitude loss a little sooner than you might with a longer wing. Therefore, planning is important if you intend on flying over any high terrain with strong winds aloft. I speak from experience. If you fly by the numbers, the AA1's are great, and most of them are afordable to purchase, but keep in mind that the operating costs of an AA1X with a 150 hp engine are mostly the same as those of a more versatile AA5A, another thing I've learned. Finally, I don't hear people talking about the age of the planes being a significant problem. Mine is a '78, but so far it's been okay. My opinion is that it's not so much how old the plane is as much as how the various owners have taken care of it over the years. Plans are for me to fly over there with Jim Crowley in his AA 1C if the weather is good. I depart Reno-Stead around 8:00 AM. I will arrive early enough to get the rental van for our transporation. Plans are: Arrival at Apex Aviation 11:00 (where the van will be)... also this FBO has the best avgas prices. The van will be used as a shuttle as it seats 7. Van to Kaffe Mocha on Airport Way for lunch. Van to see the C-1A Van to the museum... those who want to linger can and those who need to depart can when they need to. My cell phone is 775 527-2789 for transportation or information. Mark's cell phone is 775 843-7510. Look forward to seeing you there!
