This is the first I had heard of this issue and I am absolutely in favor of keeping backcountry strips available for aircraft use! These will be really great cowlings for the 4 place grummans and I could use 2 of them right now. However, I am still waiting for a response from you concerning when you anticipate being able to deliver. Since you brought this up publicly, you have mentioned privately that you will refund deposits if you are unable to deliver the STC according to a time schedule. Are you willing to say this publicly, now, as well? Best Regards, Ned > Hey Ned, speaking of, are you still interested in saving some money and > put a > down payment on the new cowling. You're the only one who is paranoid about the cowling not being delivered, "on time." What is 'on time' anyway? I have over $50,000 invested in this. Do you really think I won't finish it. And, that's fine. If you want to wait until all of the paperwork is done, cool. I'll be able to send a cowling kit for you to fit and install. And, rather than being guaranteed that the fit and finish will be as close to perfect as possible (by having me install it; I've already installed 4 of them) you can determine how you think it should fit. Now, on another note, the eyebrow and cooling exit ramps are in the STC process. Their cost will go up too, once I have those STCs in hand. This makes it difficult for me as my bird needs a new cowl to be able to fly....to get your cowl I have to rebuild one here and then fly 1400 miles to have your new cowl installed.... let's see 20 hours flight time round trip minimum times 10GPH times $3.80 per gallon fuel cost = $760. Add to that traveling costs: time off work, hotels meals, your labor costs, etc. and the savings for buying the cowl at $6000 instead of $7500 are gone. This isn't even allowing for the cost to repair my existing cowl... I have just about sent you the contracts and money several times just because I'd like to help you out with getting the STC but it would be less expensive for me to buy the cowl at the $7500 you mentioned and install it here. I have considerable fiberglass experience and have installed 2 cowls on an RV6 and RV9 so I don't think it will be any challenge I cannot handle quite well here. I wouldn't mind sending you a deposit for a $6000 cowl that you can ship to me for local installation.... Or why don't you just sell me a cowl now and I'll get it installed and approved locally and go fly...? My desire to do the first five myself was to refine the installation instructions. > Or why don't you just sell me a cowl now and I'll get it installed and > approved locally and go fly...? > ---------- First of all, that would never happen. The FAA doesn't do field approvals anymore without extensive APPROVED data. Second, you would have to hire a DER and get a one time STC on it if I did send a cowling. That would cost you an extra $5000 or so. And, third, I'm not going to be sending any proprietary information required by the DER. It sounds like you'd be best served by getting a completed, STC'd cowling. If you're buying two STC'd cowlings, there would be some cost savings.
