Subject: | Re: Superior Millenium Overhaul |
I tried to talk a hangar neighbor into getting new Lycoming cylinders aqt his overhaul.
He insisted that the Superior warrantee was the was to go. When his
cylinders started developing problems with valve guide wear and oil cnsumption
at 400 hrs (less than 2 years), Superior told him it was his problem because
of his operating technique. He has a Comanche and flew to his condo in Mexico.
Lycoming still makes a better product; in my opinion.

Anyone have any experience/reviews/comments on the Superior Millenium Overhaul
program?
5 years or TBO is one hell of a warrantee. I wasn't planning on going that way,
but with a warrantee like that it really has my attention. In addition, the
price is extremely competitive considering all new cylinders and cam...

only buy a new oil cooler. I've had two overhauled oil coolers fail.

I have a 1978 Tiger that had the same problem two years ago. I sent mine to Performance
Aircraft Parts Inc. out of Berryville AR who sent it out to have repaired.
The cost was around 250.00 but they also had a hard time getting it repaired.
Sounds like less money then a new one but you will be down longer. Chad

Is there a cowl flap stc available for Grumman Tigers, and if so does it help in
engine cooling. Chad Miller tiger862@ligtel.com

1. 04:06 PM - Cowlings (Matthew Drahzal)

I flew from Fredericksburg Texas to Collegeville PA (N10) - Gary Vought
with his newly designed cowling, with me flying my stock Tiger - as a two
ship formation.
Observations:
1)His Tiger leaves mine in the dust (really really leaves it behind - even
at high altitude where I can usually do OK)
2) His new cowling looks awesome - and it received comments in the places we
landed.
3) He never had to reduce power for cooling.
(Oh - yeah - also - he is alive and well)
/drahz
p.s. I am no aeronautical engineer - and there are too many degrees of
freedom for me to say that the Vought Cowl was responsible for everything -
but I want one in a big big way.
ppss We made the flight in one day - Gary was nice enough to throttle way
back to allow me to keep up.

Subject: | Hot muffler questions |
--> TeamGrumman-List message posted by: James Grieco <jamesgrieco@yahoo.com>
I recently installed the leaf type muffler clamps to cure the
exhaust leaks at the joints in my 75 tiger. They worked quite
well, with no noticable traces of soot in the cowl. This was
diagnosed as the nose bowl paint was blistering due to the
excessive heat in the cowl, especially around the muffler. As
the summer heat comes to Savannah, I find that I still can't
keep my hand in contact with the lower portion of the nose bowl
and fwd portion of the cowl. My neighbors 172 (we live in a
fly-in community) was also too hot to keep a hand on after a
brief run out to the runway and back last evening. Is this
normal, and do others have the same condition? The fiberglass
itself seems to take the heat ok, but I sure would like to put
some type of heat shield on the inside. My muffler had no leaks
on the last annual using pressure and soap.
By the way, Gary, if you still need drawings developed for the
cowling, I have access and thousands of hours of 3d time using
Catia. I can do full solid modeling and drawings if it is still neccessary.
