Implemented for the first time last year, the Matronics system selectively sends out the Contribution messages to those that forgot to whip out the 'ol credit card this year to support the continued operation and upgrade of the Matronics Email Lists! Don't you wish PBS worked that way? :-) You heard that right. Once you make your Contribution, these support requests messages during November will suddenly stop coming to your personal email inbox! I wanted to implement something like this for a number of years, but it was always such a daunting task to modify the back-end List processing code, that I just kept putting it off. Finally last year, I just decided to bite the bullet and put the code-pounding time it to make it work. A few days later, bam! A working system! I really do appreciate each and every one of your individual Contributions to support the Lists. It is your support that enables me to upgrade the hardware and software that are required to run a List Site like this. It also goes to pay for the commercial-grade Internet connection and to pay the rather huge electric bill to keep the computer gear running and the air conditioner powered up. I run ALL of the Matronics Email List and Forums sites here locally which allows me to control and monitor every aspect of the system for the utmost in reliably and performance. Your personal Contribution matters because when combined with other Listers such as yourself, it pays the bills to keep this site up and running. I accept exactly ZERO advertising dollars for the Matronics Lists sites. I can't stand the pop-up ads and all other commercialism that is so prevalent on the Internet these days and I particularly don't want to have it on my Email List site. If you appreciate the ad-free, grass-roots, down-home feel of the Matronics Email Lists, please make a Contribution to keep it that way!! http://www.matronics.com/contribution Thank you! As designed, there are NO over-heating problems with Grummans. The design of the cooling air exit ramp is one of the better designs on the entire plane. Trust me. I've tried 6 different designs for the cooling air exit. THe stock design is the least parasitic and cooling drag. -----Original Message----- From: Ray Toews Sent: Mon, 12 Nov 2007 14:39:14 -0800 (PST) Subject: Homebuilt Grumman My name is Ray, I live in Fort Vermilion, AB Canada. I own a 1977 Grumman Cheetah with 2500 hrs TT, 500 smoh. I recently installed a Blue Mountain Avionics EFISand will be installing their autopilot soon. How can I do this in a certified airplane? InCanada we have a fairly new category called Owner Maintenance. In OM I can do anything to my airplane except violate the original Type Certificate, but as the owner/pilot I sign offall maintenance/modifications myself. Mine is the first Grumman in Canada into OM. The main requirement is to stamp an X onto all the data plates, airframe, engine and propellor and it can't be reversed. Which, for all intents and purposes turns it into a homebuilt. I see you are doing all kinds of mods, cowlings etc. and needan airplane to do them to. The downside is I live a long ways away, the very top of Alberta, and I am not allowed to fly into the USA as you don't have OM category and don't recognize it. Ironicif I had an airplane I had built entirely myself I could fly it into USA with very little restriction but because itWAS a certified airplane which I can maintain myself it is not allowed. I think it is because the FAA doesn't want you to know about it because it makes so much sense :) If I can be of any help to you I would be willing to do what I could. I own three business's and am into local politics so time is my greatest issuebut I enjoy trying to make my Grumman go faster. I have been contemplating doing something with the exhaust pipe sticking out the bottom of the cowl, I am not an aerodynamics expert but I do know that anything sticking out into the wind creats drag so eliminating that pipe and bending it back to come out the rear of the cowl would help. A small piece of stainless on the belly would eliminate problems with that. I have looked at Power Flow and think $4k is too much to pay, equal length headers are not rocket science and mufflers are not hard to build. Also I have been contemplating removing the ducts on the bottom of the cowl and installing cowl flaps instead. I did this on a Citabria many years ago with dramatic positiveresults as regards cylinder head temps and cabin heat. Overheating is not a problem, it seldom gets that warm up here.
