I have recently completed a 3 year study and comparison of the Shell 22 grea
se vs a common Moly grease and a common Lithium grease. =C2-=C2-
Setup (1): =C2-=C2-I had 45 planes that I kept records on. =C2-
=C2-=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-Main Gear: =C2
-Used Shell 22 on one main wheel, Lithium or Moly on the other. =C2-
=C2-=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-Nose Gear: =C2
-Alternated between all of them on the nose gear and nose wheel bearings.
=C2-
When used in the nose strut, the Shell 22 was horrible. =C2-It separates a
nd runs out within a year. =C2-I have also seen a LOT of corrosion with th
e Shell 22 in the nose strut and nose wheel bearings. =C2-Not so much on t
he main wheel bearings. =C2-Not sure why. =C2-The Moly and the Lithium p
erformed extremely well under the same conditions. =C2-
Setup (2): I had 27 planes I kept records on
=C2-=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- Throttle rod end:
=C2-When used on the throttle rod end, the shell 22 does not hold up or pr
otect from rust as well as either of the other two greases. =C2-
For what it's worth, the Shell 22 grease is total crap. =C2-I'm surprised
the FAA let them approve it for aircraft.
