St. Augustine, FL
Event Description - St. Augustine, FL
Fly-In to St. Augustine, FL December 12-14
By Steve Gushwa
PLEASE NOTE: A few updates have been made. (1) We have moved the
Saturday gathering from the A1A Aleworks to a Noon lunch at Barnacle
Bill's Downtown (for logistical reasons). Barnacle Bill's is located at
14 Castillo Drive (904) 824-3663 . (2) The second update is that Galaxy
Aviation will give the AYA a 70 cent/gal discount on fuel. Just ask for
AYA/Grumman parking after you land. They also offer hotel discounts. (3)
There are no organized Friday activities scheduled. (4) Sunday Brunch
will be at the airport Fly By Cafe at 10 am.
The nation's oldest city, St. Augustine (KSGJ), is the venue for a
Fly-In December 13-14. The main attraction is the Holiday Regatta of
Lights - a spectacular and colorful parade of boats held on the St.
Augustine bay front just north of the Bridge of Lions on Saturday
evening Dec. 13th starting at 6 PM. Sailboats, trawlers, shrimp boats
and many other vessels parade, decorated with the festive lights of the
season in celebration of the holidays. This event coincides with the
city's Nights of Lights where millions of white lights celebrate the
Christmas season from November through February. Pilots flying over the
illuminated city are guaranteed a sight to remember. The first organized
AYA event that afternoon will be a Noon lunch at Barnacle Bill's
(Downtown). Plan to be seated at Noon. Click here for more St. Augustine
Holiday Events.
St. Augustine is a city rich with history. There are so many
things to do there you may wish to make this a three day event. Ride
Ripley's Sightseeing Trains, tour the Castillo de San Marcos (circa.
1672 and surviving over 300 years of hurricanes), see the Lightner
Museum with everything from shrunken heads to mummies to stained glass
and crystal. Shop the old Spanish Quarter with its many unique stores,
quaint cafes and funky bars. Walk the grounds of Flagler College or Fort
Matanzas. Drink from the legendary Fountain of Youth or visit Ripley's
Believe It or Not! Museum with its more than 800 bizarre and unusual
artifacts. Don't forget the nightly Ghost Tours - walking, riding or
floating.
Where to stay: There are 27 Bed & Breakfasts in St. Augustine and
two high end hotels in the historic district, Casa Monica and the Hilton
St. Augustine Historic Bayfront. The national chains are well
represented with the Holiday Inn, Hampton Inn, Days Inn, Best Western
and the Monterey Inn. If golf is more your style, the World Golf Village
is sure to please. The PGA and LPGA headquarters are a short drive away
and there are over 50 courses in or near St. Augustine. Just across the
Bridge of Lions The St. Augustine beaches boast miles of luxurious sand.
There are plenty of hotels and resorts where you can enjoy the sun and
sand.
The FBO, Galaxy Aviation, has arranged a 70 cent/gal fuel discount
for us, hotel discounts and dedicated parking (ask for AYA/Grumman
parking). A cab into town will run $4 each for four people (ask to be
dropped off at the Slave Market). Once you are in town everything is
within walking distance or by the sightseeing trains.
This is one Fly-In where you'll want to bring your family and
friends. Contact me at stevegushwa@hotmail.com for more information, to
RSVP and to receive informational updates.

Well, all I can say is, I'm glad the TeamGrumman-List was here to help
We tried last Tuesday to get the carb heat rise testing done. =C2-It was t

foot test anyway. =C2-THere is a cold front coming in on Saturday. =C2-I
f we can be up and down before the rain, we'll get-er-done. =C2-THis is th
e last test we need to do on the cowling.
