I had this happen. It could have locked the ailerons up. It turned out to be the roller pin bearings in the chain drive sprockets and idlers. The factory workers did not grease the brand new bearings on some of the Tiger Tigers. I'll forward the email I sent last year. My aeleron control at the yokes got very stiff. This happened after disengaging the autopilot prior to landing at the avionics shop. My A&P IA Avionics specialists thought that it was the autopilot staying engaged and suggested that if it was then it would be fine to fly home with autopilot on and then showed me a disassembled servo and how to have my homefield mechanic perform maintenance on it. The cause of the stiff aelerons was found to be the needle bearings in the control tee. All 4 were extremely dry. The pilot yoke bearing was the tightest, so tight that when turning the co-pilot yoke one could perceive that the pilot yoke delayed movement. This situation progressed rapidly from manageable to so stiff that it felt close to locking up. So the heads up is that if you experience what appears to be a non-disengaging autopilot do not delay in checking it out. The experts have told me they have n`ever heard of this happening before on our grummans so it is extrmely rare. This occurred on an early serial number Tiger Aircraft AG5B and it appears that the bearings may not have ever been properly lubricated. Also, the coating applied to the steel shaft running inisde the bearing contributed to the gummig up of the bearing needles.
