Subject: | Flashing beacon / tail strobe. |
I've been maintaining this particular Cheetah for about 4 years now. =C2
-One of the original complaints was that the flashing beacon wouldn't co
me on right away. =C2-All of the connections were cleaned and it seemed
to work fine. =C2-I really never duplicated the problem. =C2-
A few years ago, the owner had the power supply changed: =C2-Problem sol
ved again. =C2-For a while.
Last year the beacon was again intermittent. Installed a new bulb: =C2-P
roblem solved again. =C2-For a while.
A few months ago, I installed a separate power supply and bulb: =C2-Noth
ing.
So, we decided to bypass the whole flashing beacon thing and install a tai
l strobe. =C2-Problem solved again.
That is, until the owner came to pick up the plane. =C2-Now, keep in min
d, I had just checked the tail strobe for the umpteenth time and it WAS wo
rking. =C2-But, it didn't when the customer showed up. =C2-I pulled th
e ELT cover and immediately checked voltage at the input to the strobe pow
er supply: 2.56 volts. =C2-"That's impossible. =C2-I just checked that
voltage a few hours earlier and it was 12 volts." =C2-(I had also measu
red 12 volts during the bulb and beacon power supply swap a few months ear
lier.)
I pulled the fuse and checked: =C2-12 volts.
I shorted the switch out measure the voltage: 12 volts.
Then I looked at the connector next to where the pilots right knee would
be and saw the connector brown and burned looking near one of the
wires. =C2-I gave that wire a tug and it came out. =C2-It was all corr
oded and burned looking. =C2-It looked like it had corroded through. =C2
-I cut and spliced the burned sections and the strobe worked. =C2-
I have only seen this once before many years ago. =C2-It was the pitot
at that time.=C2-

Subject: | Cowling question |
I wonder if all of you out there in Team-Grumman land would do me a favor.
=C2-
I'm in the process of fitting a cowling to a plane. =C2-The initial fitt
ing seemed to be more difficult than usual, or as expected. =C2-Upon clo
se inspection, two of the engine mount bushings/isolators were not the cor
rect parts. =C2-I ordered all new=C2-bushings/isolators. =C2-Upon in
stallation, the lower left mount had been installed totally wrong. =C2-
After installing the new=C2-bushings/isolators, the cowling fit better,
but, it seemed like the cowling was WAAAAY too long for the scribe marks
on the cowling. =C2-(to where the cowling should be trimmed.) =C2-Wel
l, by a good quarter of an inch anyway.
So, I measured my plane: =C2-40 inches from the back of the cowling to
the back of the spinner. =C2-The plane I was installing the cowling mea
sured 39 3/4 inches. =C2-
So, I drove around the airport and measured two other Grummans. =C2-Both
were 39 3/4 inches. =C2-So, I measured the distance from the firewall
to the engine mount on all of the available Grummans. =C2-The engine mo
unt on my plane is 1/4 inch further from the firewall than the others.
So, if you could do me a favor and measure the distance from the back of
the cowling hinge to the back of the spinner I would appreciate it. =C2
-It's important that I know what the installed distance is for trimming
the cowling.
Please post to Team-Grumman. =C2-Thanks.

Subject: | Re: Flashing beacon / tail strobe. |
I recently had a flashing beacon that was in-op due to a fried connector ba
ck near the ELT. These Molex or Amphenol connectors are marginal for the h
igh load items like the beacon and pitot heat IMO.
