Dear Listers,
Some have asked, "What's my Contribution used for?" and that's a good question.
Here are just a few examples of what your direct List support enables. It provides
for the very expensive, commercial-grade T1 Internet connection used on
the List insuring maximum performance and minimal contention when accessing List
services. It pays for the regular system hardware and software upgrades enabling
the highest performance possible for services such as the Archive Search
Engine, List Browser, and Forums. It pays for narly 20 years (yeah, I really
said *20* years) worth of online archive data available for instant random search
and access. And, it offsets the many hours spent writing, developing, and
maintaining the custom applications that power this List Service such as the List
Browse, Search Engine, Forums, and Wiki.
But most importantly, your List Contribution enables a forum where you and your
peers can communicate freely in an environment that is free from moderation,
censorship, advertising, commercialism, SPAM, and computer viruses. How many places
on the Internet can you make all those statements these days? It is YOUR
CONTRIBUTION that directly enables these many aspects of these valuable List
services. Please support it today with your List Contribution. Its one of the
best investments you can make in your Sport...

Given the STC on our aircraft, I think this is at least somewhat on topic.
I'm not sure if this is going to help, but we can at least try. Please
look at this website, and if you think it is worthwhile trying to sign a
petition saving ethanol free fuel, please sign and pass along to others
that you feel might be interested.

This isn't what this list is about. That said, you're wrong. I'm on
two different Yahoo lists, neither has advertising, and neither has
spam. Each has more members and more postings than this list.
If multiple announcements of a fund raiser isn't spam, that I apparently
don't know what spam. Also, if you look below, you will see advertising
by three companies. And, in general, Matronics mail has more
boilerplate than Yahoo.
I've written list server software and run a variety of lists on my own
servers. If you already have a server and a decent Internet connection,
the cost is about zip. Servers are dirt cheap, disks are essentially
free, and any number of open source list server software packages are
available for free.
I don't have any deep objections to Matronics other than it is more
obnoxious than any other list server I have dealt with, and the only
with with an annual begging campaign. But I put up with that on public
radio and I can put up with it here. But let's not pretend this is
manna from heaven.

Gee Jim,
The nice thing about Gary Vogt's Team Grumman list is that you can post
whatever the hell you like.
Could it be that your mistaken?
When I click on "About Our Ads" on the Yahoo Group it goes to this link
and talks about their ads:
http://info.yahoo.com/privacy/us/yahoo/relevantads.html
Here are 2 pictures of the ads on the grummanaircraft group home page:

Like Gary said Matronics has NO Ads.
Other than Matt Dralle's annual fund raiser it has no spam or ads of any
kind. And Matt has very relevant forums. So I kinda of like to see him
supported since no one else has what he offers for us aviation
enthusiasts. If you know of other open source free forums / list servers
that are better it would be nice to let us know them.
AYA pays quite a lot for thir useless system and could use some help!

OK, I stand corrected. There aren't ads except when there are ads.
This really isn' worth arguing about.

What is the issue with a few links/ads? I love it when someone else
buys my lunch :-)
I am sure I will get whacked for saying this, but it seems this is
largely the Gary list more than the grumman list. I enjoy it, get good
info, and follow it. However I really think we should all try to get
grumman relevant information in one place and while the grumman-gang has
it's issues, it also has many contributors. I don't see adds, list
spam, or fund raising there. I do see opinions, repeat discussions, and
occasional flame wars, but that happens anywhere you get a large group
together.
I am sure there is some history as to why things are what they are....
That being the case, I will follow because Gary is a great resource and
contributor, but don't wish to contribute to fund a list based upon
whatever that history may be.
With hosting services being what they are today (nearly free), funding a
T1 and hardware to host something like this is crazy... I can't figure
out why Matt would want to do it and how it is a better solution than
doing something else.
My $0.02 which is worth much less than a few years ago.

I have used Hostmonster (among others) for years to host many functions,
to include list servers. Unlimited bandwidth and storage, using an OC48
for access to the Internet for about $8 a month. You can setup a basic
email list server in about 15 minutes. This is much more bandwidth than
the T1 mentioned. Assuming a refresh of a single low end server of
around $2K for a self hosted solution, one could use a service like this
for about 20 years and save the bandwidth, power, and maintenance costs.
Something like this would certainly be suitable to house a list service
similar to what we are using with Matronics. I could never see choosing
to host something like this myself, knowing capable and cheap solutions
exist for hosting.
Also, I haven't paid a dime, nor been asked to, to use the grumman-gang.
Since the list we are discussing this on is grumman focused, it is a
perfectly suitable option (in my opinion). Looking at the posters to
TeamGrumman, it is relatively safe to say most of us are already using
the other list, with a handful of topics showing up here that are
different.
All of this being said, I applaud those giving up their personal time to
provide services like this. I just can't see why they would want to
invest in the infrastructure too.

Subject: | Re: What's My Contribution Used For? |
The story goes something like this.
Years ago, and I mean years ago, something like 13 plus years ago, like so many
others who own a Grumman, I joined the Grumman Gang. Getting booted off the the
GG the first time for sending out a Christmas wish was quite a shocker. But,
having Mark send an email saying, in effect, "If you say you're sorry and
promise to follow the rules, I'l let you back on." At the time, another GG
user, to whom I'd mentioned this exchange, said, "Oh, yea, if you grovel enough,
Mark always let's you back on."
My first thought was, "Great, now my mother is running a forum for airplanes."
Still, I groveled and got back on. Not long after that, I got a virus infected
email from the GG and wrote and said as much. Since the content wasn't directly
Grumman related, I got booted again. Groveled again. Got back on. Then got
kicked off again for something. It was at that point I went looking for a -list
server.
That is when I found Matronics. It wasn't everything I wanted, but, when I
talked to Matt, he told me it was a self regulating forum. That is, we police
ourselves.
My thought at the time was, "If I can move Grumman topic discussion traffic to
TeamGrumman-List, I won't have to deal with Mark's need to be my mother." While
on GG again, I added the TeamGrumman-List email address along with my company
name, AuCountry Aviation. Mark started blocking me emails. Needless to
say, the traffic didn't come. That's fine. My control issues have to do with
me, not how others choose to live. After I got kicked off again, for the fourth
time, for something I can't remember, I rejoined under the name,
FlyingTiger0747@aol.com.
I was on GG for 2 years under the name FlyingTiger0747@aol.com. I never signed
my emails. Then, getting brave, I let a few people know who I was. Bob Stewart
was the first to make a reference to me as FlyingTiger0747 on GG. It probably
wasn't a month later that I responded to someone who posted on GG with a
question something like, "My A&P wants to cut a circular access cover under the
spar at the outboard edge of the fuel tank so that it will be easier to seal."
My response, "When are Grumman owners going to stop taking their planes to
mechanics that don't know a *&()^%&( thing about Grummans?"
For that, I got booted off again. It was Grumman related. I didn't say "Merry
Christmas." I didn't write about virus' in emails. I guess someone with a
dirty mind didn't like what he/she/it translated *&()^%&( into.
Since then, now and then, one of my customers sends me a screen shot of the
topics on GG and I may or may not request more info. The most annoying part of
GG was, and still is, Ron's holier than thou approach to literally every topic
that is mentioned. No one ever gets in the last word. Where does he find the
time to insert himself into every topic?
TeamGrumman-list may not be the answer to everyone's idea of an open forum. I'm
OK with that. Scott says TG-List is my list. It isn't anyones list. I started
posting pictures and stories in a vain attempt to get others to share. I'm sure
Cliff has his share of stories. As well as Linn. Hell, they're both older than
me. Ned is just a pup, but I'll bet he has quite a few stories. Bob Hodo
probably has a few, too, if he'd care to spin a yarn or two.
Oh, and just to stay on topic: contributions. I usually contribute each year.
I didn't last year or this year because I don't have any spare cash. Maybe
next year.

Subject: | New inlet on AG5B |
Hey Larry, heads up. This is for you .
I got the inlet installed today. Pretty easy actually. The air filter portion
sits a bit lower than the airbox on the carb. Not a big deal. I'll be using
the same black duct that goes on a real Tiger.
I ran into a clearance problem with the #2 exhaust riser. I thought about
making the new air box only for planes with a Power Flow but didn't bare
listening to all the whining. More to come.
