Subject: | KSAV2011 PRE CONVENTION FLY IN Article # 4 |
*The following article is the fourth in a series recently published in an
grumman related newsletter regarding the 2011 PRE convention fly in in
KSAV/Savannah Ga, this coming May 21-23.
*
*
*
*(continued from previous editions)
*
*
*
*Now that you are in town: Get out of town. While Savannah's historic
district is rife with life, her surrounding area offers interesting
alternatives for those of you coming in early and/or renting a vehicle for
exploration. The Savannah Area Visitor's Center is just 3 blocks from our
host hotel and has hordes of information for an expanded visit. We'll
suggest a few. *
*Just 17miles to the east you'll find Tybee Island, a very laid back non
resort island (no golf courses and only one grocery store) whose historic
lighthouse beckons you to its top for vista views of ships entering
Savannah's harbor or across the sound to Hilton Head. While on the island,
kayak enthusiasts should take advantage of visiting the premier sea kayak
operation on the Atlantic Coast, Sea Kayak of Georgia. See our friend Ronnie
Kemp for world class training or have him schedule a trip and you can paddle
versus fly down the Atlantic Coast to KSSI. For you civil war buffs, on the
way back across the causeway from Tybee, stop by Ft. Pulaski, a National
Park Service preserved civil war fortress that the north made short order of
with their rifled cannons, thus beginning the siege of Savannah. Closer in
is Ft. Jackson and about 45 minutes south, Ft. McAllister. Back on the
mainland, on the scenic bluff above the the Wilmington River, you'll find
Bonaventure Cemetery,160 acres of what has been described as "a Victorian
sculpture garden where they happen to bury people." *
*There are numerous seafood restaurants on the waterways in and around
Savannah. If you like your seafood boiled or steamed, Despisito's across the
bridge in Thunderbolt is a favorite of ours. Tubby's Tank house is just down
the river and always has a crowd. Uncle Bubba's is further out highway 80
towards Tybee and has a nice marsh view deck. Stay away from the heavily
advertised touristy places as all you will find is quick cooked food for the
masses. *
*Do you have an itch for baseball? Catch a Sand Gnats(NY Mets farm team)
game over at "Historic Grayson Stadium". Built in 1926, it is the oldest
working minor league ballpark in America. If you have room for your golf
clubs in your Grumman, head across the river to the Westin Savannah Harbor
Golf Resort & Spa, home of the PGA Champions Tour Senior Legends of Golf. *
*The deadline to reserve our discounted rate at the Desoto is April 21st.
While rooms may still be be available, the hotel can't guarantee space or
rates after that date. Many thanks to those of you who have already locked
in your reservation. You may book directly via our website listed below on
the "where do we stay" page or by dialing 1-800-HILTONS and asking for they
AYA rate at the Desoto Hilton Savannah for the fly in dates.*
*Remember, this is your time to come and relax and see Savannah at your own
pace. We have spiced up your visit by offering a couple of aviation related
tours that we are sure you'll enjoy. See the website for details. *
*As mentioned in previous articles, Savannah is a great walking town. If you
elect to not to rent a car, if not holding court at a pub with Nigel and
Graham, Melissa or Wes will be glad to pick you up at the FBO and save you
the cab fare to town. Hotel property valet parking rates are $15/24h.*
*We encourage you to check out our website
www.ksav2011.com<http://www.ksav2011.com/www.ksav2011.com>. You'll
find links to other activities as well as an archive of these
articles in The *tar. We will also have a finalized itinerary as the actual
dates gel up. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, contact us
via the website or ksav2011@gmail.com*

They cannot force you to have insurance, but they aren't required to
rent you a spot, either.

Do they require the same from transient aircraft? Is this for airport or hangar
use? It is OK for hangar use, but sounds odd for airport use.

Been normal at my airport ever since they built the first hangar. I
carry liability not-in-motion only that satisfies the airport's limits.

I'd like to know your basis for that statement.
My airport is County owned, and my lease requires liability insurance if
I want to keep my hangar. They'd just cancel my lease if I didn't have
the insurance.

Yes, our airport requires proof of insurance to tie down or be based at
the airport. Our insurance company always issues the proof of coverage
automatically every year.

I got this a few weeks ago. Just wondering what your airport requires
and if this is legal.

You are receiving this email because the City does not have a copy of
your
current insurance certification for (at least one of) your aircraft.
Please immediately provide a copy for each of your aircraft (for which
we do not
already have a current copy) and assure that each time you renew, your
provider
sends an additional copy to this address:
City Hall
Attn: Andy Heath
1225 Lincoln Way, Room 1
Auburn, CA 95603
If it's more convenient, you may bring your current copy to my office on
the
airport. If I am not there, slip it under my office door. I will deliver
it to
Andy for you.
I am keeping a database of this information. If you are responsible for
more
than one aircraft, you may contact me to find out for which aircraft we
need
certification copies.
Thanks for your response.

I'd like to know your basis for that statement.
My airport is County owned, and my lease requires liability insurance if I
want to keep my hangar.=C2- They'd just cancel my lease if I didn't have
the insurance.

I really don't have to have AIRCRAFT liability insurance. I need proof
of liability insurance (of any kind) to rent a hangar owned and operated
by the County. It's cheaper to put insurance on the airplane than any
other insurance I've found. It's no more a power trip than a dwelling
owner making the renter buy insurance as a condition of occupancy. If
you own your own hangar, then you are welcome to do whatever you need to
do to protect the structure. My airport is just protecting it's
investment. This requirement is normal for rental at government-owned
facilities ..... that are self-insured.
I'm curious .... do you own, rent a hangar, or tie down???
