No, the GPS in the iPhone 3G and later IS a true GPS, but the iPad only has
a true gps chip if you have the 3G version. You don't need an active data
plan to use that GPS chip, though.
However, a non-3G iPad will still approximate its location using wifi trian
gulation, just not as accurately as GPS. The best way to tell if you have t
he gps model is to look at the part number and compare it to those at store
.apple.com.-

ipad is indeed a 3G model.

Hey Claude,
I just did a little test with it.- Connected via wifi to Colin's Droid it
located us against a google road map.- Turned off the wifi on the phone,
and got the warning on the ipad that the connection to the internet was lo
st.- But the map was still there, and I was still located on the map.-
So I walked to the end of the road and it moved with me, so there apparentl
y is a gps- built into the unit.
He does not have a separate data plan for the ipad.- He either connects o
n a wifi that it finds or he connects via his phone thru wifi.
He says it won't update the map if you leave it unless it is internet conne
cted.- I don't know how that would apply to map subscriptions or whatever
for use in the air.
Have you used yours at altitude?- I have the same phone and tend to lose
cell coverage=0A above 5000' agl, and lose 3g and 1X by the time I hit 8000
' agl.- I'm wondering if a 3g ipad would stay connected when a wifi ipad
connecting via cell phone would drop out.

This is from the latest installation instructions. I have removed the =0Ac

I realized they stick too far into the inlet. If you want, you can =0Arun
a tap through the nutplate and make it real easy to remove the screw. Onc
e =0Ayou snug it down, the friction on the screw keeps it from backing out.
Plus, =0Aeven if you lose it in flight, it's not a big deal. The leading
edge will come =0Aup about 1/4 inch. Ask me how I know. =0A=0AGood quest
