You don't need an active data plan to use that GPS chip, though. However, a non-3G iPad will still approximate its location using wifi trian gulation, just not as accurately as GPS. The best way to tell if you have t he gps model is to look at the part number and compare it to those at store .apple.com.- -mel via cell On May 14, 2011, at 10:31 PM, "allenc3@bellsouth.net" <allenc3@bellsouth.ne t> wrote: no, the gps in the ipad is a true gps, unlike the one in an iphone. My daug hter, who flys a Lear 35 uses hers up to 41000 ft! If you have a 3GS model, you do not need to have a paid 3G subscription ($25 a month) for the GPS t o work. If it is a 3G Ipad, DL Foreflight ($70 a year) and never buy anothe r chart or plate. Then buy it from your son. You do not have to be connecte d to the internet via 3G or Wifi, as Foreflight is DL to the ipad. Google m aps and programs like them must have an internet connection to function. Th e built in app "Maps" will function without an internet connection if your ipad is indeed a 3G model. He does not have a separate data plan for the ipad.- He either connects o n a wifi that it finds or he connects via his phone thru wifi. He says it won't update the map if you leave it unless it is internet conne cted.- I don't know how that would apply to map subscriptions or whatever for use in the air. Have you used yours at altitude?- I have the same phone and tend to lose cell coverage=0A above 5000' agl, and lose 3g and 1X by the time I hit 8000 ' agl.- I'm wondering if a 3g ipad would stay connected when a wifi ipad connecting via cell phone would drop out. - more questions about CamLocs This is from the latest installation instructions. I have removed the =0Ac ountersunk nutplates. You only need those if you have #10 nutplates holdin g =0Ayour old cowling on. The Jaguar cowling is held in place with the #8 screws.=0A=0AI can see I forgot to put the Camloc receptacles in the previo us list. You =0Awon't need the countersunk receptacles. The cowling is co untersunk. The =0Areceptacle you need is 214-16N.=0A=0AAs for the screw in place of a camloc at the front of the upper cowling, I =0Aoriginally inten ded to put a camloc in there. After installing the camlocs on =0Athe side, I realized they stick too far into the inlet. If you want, you can =0Arun a tap through the nutplate and make it real easy to remove the screw. Onc e =0Ayou snug it down, the friction on the screw keeps it from backing out. Plus, =0Aeven if you lose it in flight, it's not a big deal. The leading edge will come =0Aup about 1/4 inch.
