how many shims do you have on each mount ________________________________ From: discover <923te@att.net> Sent: Fri, June 3, 2011 6:34:45 PM Subject: TeamGrumman-List: Re: Cowling alignment controversy. Gary, You did a nice job aligning the Jaguar cowl to a spinner that was out of alignment. The engine was hanging down to the right. The engine lined right up with the factory cowl when the left top engine mount bolt was properly torqued. Too bad you did not check and correct the alignment of the spinner before you started installing the Jaguar cowl. The plane has picked up a couple knots since the engine was aligned properly. Someday, soon I hope, I will also have the Jaguar cowl in correct alignment and it will not only fit properly but once again look as good as it does in your pictures. Following is a copy of my email to you after first seeing these pictures over a year ago.: ----- Original Message ----- From: 923te Sent: Saturday, April 03, 2010 11:56 PM Subject: Alignment The spinner was down and to the right a bit on the alignment on the old cowl. Did you have to remove a spacer from the top left to get the spinner centered on the new cowl? Looks like the gap between cowl and spinner is less than the old one was...that would be good Read this topic online here: http://forums.matronics.com/viewtopic.php?p=341995#341995

Just for shits and grins, next time you check your oil (with the cowling open), look at the #1 cylinder baffle. Look at where it chafes on upper cowling. Some are worse than other. Most folks believe the chafing comes during engine start up and shutdown. True, the engine moves around a lot then. But really, the motion is less than 1/2 inch at the forward baffles (up and down). The factory made that baffle 1/4 inch too high toward the front. Now, take that same engine baffle combination and, in flight, just make a turn to the right. The baffle is actually crushed into the upper cowling. The engine moves well over 1/2 inch. Most AG5Bs with the big doubler on the upper cowling have that doubler cut all the way through. Here's another well kept secret. Look at the #4 cylinder baffle. Especially on a Tiger. Notice the mis-match with the baffle supporting the oil cooler. Notice the mis-match at the #4 to #2 cylinder baffle. That's because the #4 baffle is the same basic baffle as the one used on the Traveler. The Left rear baffle (oil cooler baffle) on a Tiger is also about 1/4 inch too high (at the end where it attaches to the #4 cylinder baffle) to make a perfect uniform gap between the baffle and the upper cowling. They can get away with it because the engine doesn't rotate in the direction which would make contact with the upper cowling. I've made measurements all over the engine both static and in-flight.

Linn, Nice meeting you at SSI....got to match lots of names with faces. I've got 2 sets of plugs, new in box, to get rid of. 4 Champion REM37BY and 4 REM38E per set. I bought what was left from a closed shop to get a good price for myself. Know any body that might be interested @$150 per set plus shipping ? I will make the offer on GG next week. Week end seems to be a slow Andy Thomas ----- Original Message ----- From: Linn Walters To: teamgrumman-list@matronics.com Sent: Saturday, June 04, 2011 1:43 PM Subject: Re: TeamGrumman-List: Engine movement On 6/4/2011 1:59 PM, Gary Vogt wrote: Just for shits Ron will get you for that one! ;-) Well, maybe not .... this isn't the GG! and grins, next time you check your oil (with the cowling open), look at the #1 cylinder baffle. Have you seen the mechanical micrometer with the point that sticks out when you extend it? Or, maybe a slide rule (you're old so you'll know what that is.) If you extend it, close the cowling on it, it compresses to the available height. Then, check before and after ground run or flight. It gives a good approximation. Certainly not to two decimal accuracy. ________________________________ From: Linn Walters <pitts_pilot@bellsouth.net> Sent: Sat, June 4, 2011 11:43:38 AM Subject: Re: TeamGrumman-List: Engine movement On 6/4/2011 1:59 PM, Gary Vogt wrote: Just for shitsRon will get you for that one! ;-) Well, maybe not .... this isn't the GG! and grins, next time you check your oil (with the cowling open), look at the #1 cylinder baffle.
