Service bulletins are never mandatory for part 91 operations. The AD reference to the SB is simply giving you an acceptabl e way to accomplish the requirements of the AD. As always you can apply for permissi on to use an alternative method of compliance and if approved you would nev er be required to perform the actions in the SB. Only the FAA can make acti ons mandatory. Whether it is prudent to perform SB 185A on a repetitive bas is is a different question. The AD is NOT recurring. If it was performed properly and the wing spar clearance is correct and/or was shimmed properly if needed then that doesn't change and the only thing beneficial would be to check the spar bolt torque to see if they are secure. There have been some bolt failures, possibly due to loose fitting wing spars which worked back and forth and apparently loaded the bolts causing fatigue failure. And of course bolts could have been over torqued. The AD came about after American General replaced a bunch of wings that were hail damaged at the factory sitting outside. Draw your own conclusions. The AD only references SB-185 regarding checking the bolts with respect to plating, scoring, clearances, etc. It's a non-recurring AD. The SB, in their compliance, says to check every 500 hours. ________________________________ From: Deems Herring Sent: Sat, June 11, 2011 2:31:14 AM Subject: RE: TeamGrumman-List: AD 95-19-15 R1 and SB-185A The AD must be completed . I mic'd the bolts with a digital mic that goes to .0001. I compared them to new bolts. Even without the cad plating, the bolts measured the same. Maybe someone should ask Ron. ________________________________ From: flyv35b Sent: Sat, June 11, 2011 5:41:44 AM Subject: Re: TeamGrumman-List: AD 95-19-15 R1 and SB-185A I agree. I looked in my log books and didn't find any record of any paint job, so I still think that it's the original paint. The blue colors have plenty of chips and nicks but somehow they look fresher and shinier then the white. I will take better pictures and will check if somebody on GG will recognize the colors. If not, I will have to trust the paint shop guy. I have put 2 spacers on the top right mount and 2 spacers on the bottom right mount. The left mounts have one spacer each. I started saving my installation notes on Bondline: http://www.bondline.org/wiki/Installing_AuCountry_Jaguar_Cowl_on_my_AA5-B When you get a chance, please take a look. I would like to know what you think. Thank you, -Boris > Time: 07:55:37 PM PST US > From: Gary Vogt > Subject: Re: TeamGrumman-List: paint code question for > Jaguar cowl > > Hi Boris, > If the white is still the original 817U, it will buff out nicely. Odds are, if the blue is still shiny, it's been repainted. The colors on the 70's era Grummans are RM Centauri Acrylic Enamel. It's not baked on. Also, the colors are not custom colors. The orange, for example, is the orange from a 73 Volkswagon. The metallic brown is from a Dodge or Plymouth of around the same year. I'm sure if you take your ELT cover to an automotive paint store and try to match paint colors from 73 on, you'll find yours. Also, DuPont has totally revised the paint codes for paint sold in California. So, the numbers may not match up. Most paint stores have the old codes though. So, tell us, how's the installation going? How many shims on the engine mounts did you need?
