If it is truly nickel-chrome plated, the only real solution is to take
it to a good plating shop that will "unplate" it. Much like stripping
old chrome plating from an automobile bumper. What remains is very well
adhered to the base metal and will not be removed with any other
mechanical process.
>From what you describe, the original plating process was not done
properly. A good speed ship that has access to nickel-chrome plating
will do an excellent job.

Subject: TeamGrumman-List: plated spinner
I have a spinner that someone had plated a long time ago. Most of the
plating had come off. Then it was painted. When I stripped it to
repaint it, I found bits and pieces of the plating still there. I tried
removing the plating by sanding, didn't work. Tried a wire wheel on an
edge to see if I could pick up the edge, didn't work.
Question: How does one remove this plating?

Gary:
I'm guessing that it was plated with ELECTROLESS NICKEL. And then polished.
If so the strip is easy... NITRIC ACID as close to 100% as you can get.
It WILL NOT attach the aluminum. It will also remove
any ferrous material in the part.
