Much like stripping old chrome plating from an automobile bumper. What remains is very well adhered to the base metal and will not be removed with any other mechanical process. >From what you describe, the original plating process was not done properly. And then polished. If so the strip is easy... NITRIC ACID as close to 100% as you can get. It WILL NOT attach the aluminum. It will also remove any ferrous material in the part.
