---------------------------------------------------------- TeamGrumman-List Digest Archive --- Total Messages Posted Sat 08/27/11: 2 ---------------------------------------------------------- Today's Message Index: ---------------------- 1. 10:53 AM - 626 . . . . was Re: Carb airbox (Gary Vogt) 2. 02:47 PM - Re: AG5B Alternator Light (busdriver) ________________________________ Message 1 _____________________________________ Time: 10:53:54 AM PST US From: Gary Vogt Subject: TeamGrumman-List: 626 . . . . was Re: Carb airbox And, Bob, you know, for the life of me I'll never understand the logic behi nd that airbox. =C2-Not only is the entry into the airbox located in an a rea of accelerating airflow (i.e., Bernoulli would say, reducing pressure) on the bottom of the cowling, but it is so big that removing the cowling be comes a nightmare. =C2-Then, there is installing the cowling. =C2-Then getting the SCAT hose in place. =C2-=0A=0ABut, the real issue is losing b etween .8 and 1.0 inches of manifold pressure. =C2-=0A=0AI've been flying my own design on 626. =C2-This plane has pressure transducers with digit al readouts that measure Static and Manifold Absolute Pressure. =C2-Flown side-by-side with an identical AG5B and it's stock inlet and the minimum d elta between the 2 planes is .8 inches with 626 always showing a higher man ifold pressure. =C2-Plus, my airbox is only 3 inches high at it's highest point . . . =C2-still mounted on the side of the cowling. =C2-Even wit h an airbox that requires cutting into the metal baffle on the front of the engine just to make it fit, it's noticeably easier to remove the cowling. =C2-=0A=0A==========0A626 got new wheel pants this past week. =C2-This is the umpteenth set of wheel pants I've installed. =C2 -The first, however, that needed the bracket for the rubber shock mount o n the topside of the landing gear.=0A=0ALessons learned:=C2-=0A=C2- (1) The parts book showed shims that fit under the bracket. =C2-Honestly, I' d never noticed a shim . . . but I never really looked either. =C2-=0A=C2 - =C2- =C2- =C2- =A2 I got the thick shims. =C2-Nope. =C2 -Made the bracket too high. =C2-No shim was about right.=0A=C2- (2) T he bracket that bolts to the inside that supports the inside of the fairing arrived undrilled for the fairing mounting holes. =C2-=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-=A2 OK. =C2-Now, how in the world do I figure out wher e the holes are supposed to be????=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-=A2 F iguring: Since the wheel pant has only pilot locating holes, I can make it fit perfectly. =C2-Just match drill the two.=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2 -=A2=C2-The first thing I noticed was the bracket is not the same length as the one on my Tiger. =C2-It's shorter. =C2-=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-=A2=A2=C2-This required corner nut plates=C2-=0A=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-=A2=C2-During installa tion, it became apparent the fairings do not have the same curvature as tha t required by the bracket.=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-=A2=C2-Warp ing the wheel pant into place (with brackets bonded to the wheel pant) I ne eded to enlarge my 3/16 inch holes to 3/8 inches.=0A=0A=C2- (3) I had a l ot of difficulty getting the left wheel fairing mounted due to it not confo rming to the shape needed. =C2-=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-=A2 Th e sides mounting to the inboard bracket needed to be pulled in well over 1 1/2 inches. =C2-=0A=0A=C2- (4) Nose gear: =C2-The pilot holes for the tow bar holes on the nose wheel pant, if you select the axle hole as refer ence,=C2-=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-and=C2-keeping the bracke t parallel to the bottom of the wheel fairing, are off about 3/8 of an inch . =C2-=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-=A2=C2-Match drill AFTER the bracket is installed.=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-=A2=C2-For the t op seal, DO NOT DRILL ALL OF THE HOLES AT THE SAME TIME. =C2-=0A=0A=C2- =C2- =C2- =C2-=A2=C2-Make sure the seal is in place, locate the two front holes, Drill, install rivnuts, attach with screws, THEN DRILL THE REMAINING HOLES.=0A=0A=0A626 is 5 knots faster with wheel pants.=0A=0A =0A________________________________=0AFrom: "n76lima@mindspring.com" =0ATo: Gary Vogt =0ASent: Saturday , August 27, 2011 7:07 AM=0ASubject: Carb airbox=0A=0A>Unfortunately, the g ood folks at American General took a really simple and =0A>effective electr ical system and fucked the hell out of it. -It was probably >designed by th e same guy that designed the stupid air intake for the carb.=0A=0AWhoa, slo w down Gary.=C2- That was the sainted Loyd Montague, now guru @ TF, that made the first AG-5B airbox.=0A=0A--Bob Steward ________________________________ Message 2 _____________________________________ Time: 02:47:35 PM PST US Subject: TeamGrumman-List: Re: AG5B Alternator Light From: "busdriver" Ned, Thanks again- I forgot to mention that I put a brand new master switch in also. Throwing new parts at a problem is not the most cost effective way of troubleshooting... but sometimes the quickest!
