The flashing beacon is useless as a position indicator at distances over 1/2 mile. Fly with someone behind you and turn off the na v lights. Odds are, he won't be able to see you. I came very close to a mid-air collision at Livermore because of a Cessna no t talking on the radio and turning final right in front of me. I could not s ee any of his lights. They were lost in the ground clutter. I haven't had a flashing beacon since 1990.
