Subject: | Re: Flying with a level |
Oh, sorry Bob, I misunderstood the objective. -=0A=0AWhen I was a young e
ngineer, I used to go to my supervisor with all of these ideas I had for pr
ojects that we'd likely never work on or problems that may or may not occur
and I'd say, "Jay, what if . . . . " -Then, he'd tell me to go solve a r
eal problem. -I always had lots of ideas that I thought would be interest
ing to try. -He called it mental masturbation. -He'd say, "At least you
feel like you're accomplishing something whether or not you actually do."
=0A=0AOK, so, now I know the objective. -Any ideas on where to start?=0A
=0A--------------- -Ned writes . . . ----------------------------=0AGary
said "There isn't anything you can do now except to optimize what you have"
=0A-=0AGary, surely you jest???=0A-=0Aof all people I would 've thought
you'd be the last to say something like that....considering all the stuff
you yourself does and have developedand are developing that ain't "already
built"=0A-=0ANed....he he he=0A------------------------------------------
---------------------=0AGood point, Ned. -=0A=0AWhen I wrote that, I thin
king in terms of "there isn't anything you can do now with respect to deter
mining fuselage minimum drag independent of wing drag, the wings lift/drag
independent of the fuselage or changing the wing-or horizontal-incidenc
e -(angle of attack) or related systems, wing length, wing shape, etc."
=0A=0AWhat I had in mind was optimizing things like wheel pants, wing tips,
antennas, engine, prop, ways to get the weight down . . . -you get the i
dea.=0A-=========0A=0ABob,-=0A=0AA while back I read an
article about a guy with a Luscombe who put a micro-switch, attached to th
e block, so that it touched the back side of his prop. -When the engine w
as producing thrust, the crank pulled forward in its journals. -At zero t
hrust, the prop would back off. -He was able determine the lift/drag of h
is Luscombe and developed his own curves for parasitic drag and induced dra
g. -=0A=0AAdmittedly, he treated the Luscombe as a system. -But, it mig
ht be a start. -His goal was to find minimum drag to optimize his range.
-=0A=0ASorry again Bob, there was nothing after #8. -I can't give away
all of my secrets.=0A=0A============0ARadical Race pl
ane ideas: -(these ideas are independent of one another. -A classic exa
mple of mental masturbation)=0A=0A1. -Move the pilot, instruments, contro
ls and everything, back to the back seat; about 2 feet.=0A2. -Use a canop
y from an AA1, cut the aft fuselage down to fit the canopy. -Install AA1
seats.=0A3. -Install a battery in the back, aft of the baggage compartmen
t, on a slide to move the CG back as far as possible during flight. -Retu
rn it for landing.=0A4. -Max range:-=0A- - - a. Install fuel tank
s in the foot wells in the back. -=0A- - - b. Make the wing tanks o
ccupy all three bays in the inboard wing panel.=0A- - - c. 30 gals of
fuel in the baggage compartment-=0A- - - d. -I forget the rest.
-At one point, I think I had max fuel load at 120 gallons.=0A5. -Lower
the engine 3 inches. -Design a cowling that was more symmetric in side pr
ofile. -=0A- - -- This would lower the high pressure area ahead of
the windshield=0A6. -Carb/fuel injector intake ahead of the windshield.
-Duct it down the inside of the plane though an intercooler to drop the t
emp.=0A- - -- duct through the firewall to the carb/fuel injector.
-Takes advantage of the high pressure area. -=0A7. -Design a cowling
with the back of the cowling 6 to 10 inches higher in back with a shape tha
t blends with the windshield. -=0A- - -- Again, move the high press
ure area away from the windshield.=0A=0AThose are just a few ideas. -I ha
ve more.=0A=0AGary=0A=0A=0A________________________________=0A From: Bob St

=0A =0AGary, I (we?) am looking at this as a thought exercise, attempting t

or immediate implementation on Ned's plane.=0ABouncing these ideas off othe

ate with the same goal, of greater understanding and some input about thing
s that might not have been considered before.=0A--Bob Steward=0A=0ASent fro
