I looked at one t hat had the rear mounted battery (in I think was a Piper battery box), and thought what a pain in the ass to service. I chose to go with the 9 lbs of lead in the tail, figuring this would not be much more then the weight of the new box and the long cable. I still think that was the right desison t oday. I have the original starter and alternator that I still could upgrad e and remove a bit of the ballast. What a pain-in-the-ass. On my plane, the wrap around plastic and the plastic side panels have been replaced with my o wn design. To open the back, I just lift out the entire back bottom/lower co ver. No screws needed. Hat shelf stays in place. Leaning over to get at it is still a pain. Carrying unnecessary weight was never an option.
