Hi Richard,
I have copied this to the Team Grumman list.
The Jaguar is an engine cowling that was made available thru an STC
about 2 years ago. It was developed by Gary Vogt who has a website and a
Grumman oriented discussion list. His website is:
http://www.aucountry.com/ some pictures of the cowling:
http://www.aucountry.com/Team_Folder/Cowling_Folder/index_Cowling.html
There is a sign up link for the discussion list on his website.
The Jaguar is differnet than the LoPresti in that the LoPresti is
actually only a nose bowl replacement and not an entire cowling like the
Jaguar is. It also includes a complete set of superior aluminum engine
baffles. The Jaguar was a needed part as many of the factory cowlings
are gettig beyond repair and there were no new replacements available.
But the Jaguar is really much better than the original factory cowl as
you can gather from reviewing it on Gary's website. I think it took
about 10 years for Gary to get the Jaguar approved with countless
changes over the years of development. It greatly enhances the cooling,
speed and looks of the Tiger.
Your Fellow Grumman Enthusiast,
Ned
May I ask---what is the Jaguar referred to on your picassa sight?
Thanks again,
Richard

Wow! I'm glad I downgraded to Jeeps. I can only guess how expensive all that av
gear must have cost. Then again, both are very sweet panels. Gary, want to help
me design a new panel for my 1972 CJ-5?

Are you Fast Eddie?
If so, do you still have your Cirrus?
How would you compare your Cirrus ownership experience to your Tiger
owner experience?

The top cowling is hinged down the center just like the factory cowl. The si
de has 5 zus quarter turn fasteners. So to check oil is almost as fast as on
one of the factory cowls. Just open that side of the top. No problem. Only n
ow I don't get poked in the head by the factory style latch spears (rods)
My cooling improved by about 50 degrees. It went from the 380's to the 330's
. My speed has increased some. I am still doing flight testing to determine t
he speed increase.
My Tiger was already fast from all the speed mods I had done. So it makes se
nse to me that I won't see the same speed increase that the others have seen
with the Jaguar cowl. I wish speed mods were cumulative and you could count
on just adding up what each mod contributes by itself without any other mod
s having been dome but it just doesn't work that way.
The fact that I've gained about 50 degrees of cooling tells me that PART of t
he cost of that additional cooling is probably additional drag. I'm talking a
bout more cooling drag than I had before the Jaguar. If I were able to reduc
e the cooling airflow to the point that my CHT's are back to 380's then I wo
uld expect to see more speed. If done right one should be able to reduce the
air exit volume while increasing the exit velocity of the cooling air. So t
he goal would be to decrease the mass flow and increase the exit velocity. T
wo seemingly contradictory things
On the other hand, everything is finally starting to come together and I've g
ot speed and a cool running engine so perhaps leave well enough alone....
