Subject: | Eyebrow lighting |
There was a recent discussion on the GG on cockpit lighting. Here is my res
ponse
-
I'll chime in here also.
Several yrs ago while attending an AOPA Summit in Tampa, one of the seminar
s was on cockpit lighting and visual acuity. Since many pilots have some so
rt of visual issues at one time or another in their lifetime, I wanted to l
earn more as my eyes age. The instructor was a pilot/eye physician. We went
thru different color based scenarios in a darkened room. The end result, f
rom what I remember, is that most of the pilots in the room choose the gree
n lighting...followed by the blue. Red was the least color chosen, and I do
nt recall why the doc didnt recommend it, only as a last resort.
-
So if I was to choose the eyebrow lighting, it would be green.
-
That would be a great seminar topic at AYA OSH if the doc who presented at
AOPA can be found.

I powder coated mine a charcoal gray that has a greenish tint that matches
the interior of our 79 Tiger. The original coating came off easy and I was
surprised by how rough the control wheel castings were under the original
coating. I smoothed them out and applied more powder than usual to help
fill in the imperfections. They turned out nice but some of the pits in the
original casting can be seen if you look close.

Does anyone have any suggestions on where to get control wheels
refurbished? My control wheels are starting to peel and look pretty bad. I have
seen
several options such as leather covers but wondered if anyone has found a
solution that really looks good. Also, has anyone ever replaced the lower
plastic panel where the the rocker switches and throttle are located? How
labor intensive is it to replace? Mine is beginning to look really bad and has
several cracks.

Tell more about the SR71!
Was it supersonic at 50'?
Was fuel leaking from it or is that a myth?

You're gonna love flying it - it's really smooooooooth. And when you pull
up to the pump, it gets even better. I'll post my data from the flight back
north in the next couple of days as soon as I get caught up on work.

Dean,
Still a few kinks to work out with the wiring. I would recommend installing t
he switch on the 2 amp line. Seems to work out well.
For a long term solution I'd use two toggles like on a Citabria. Direct cont
rol over each mag without thinking too hard about it. I liked the dual toggl
es on my Citabria. I would eliminate the key altogether and install a keyed k
ill switch that interrupts the Master.
