Bob:
Way back, about 12, maybe 15 years back, after my first R&R of the cowling
on my AA5, I decided the install and assembly procedure of that nut and
bolt were totally inappropriate. Much like that of the pleated vacuum air
filter [D9-18-1] screw. The cure was easy and I wrote up the cure and
posted it on the Gang. Replace the screw with a fully threaded screw, add
two (2) washers [fender washers/wood washers] - One outside and one inside
of the cowling for support and using a lock washer and nut make the screw
a permanent part of the cowl. This way you don't loose the screw. You do
not have to fight with getting under the cowl, get on your back and fight
trying to align the screw with the Adel Clamp. The entire job can be done
while standing up and just reaching into the cowl and tightening down or
loosening a second locknut on the Adel clamp - Simple ;-)
The same is true for the vacuum filter. A full length screw and nut will
hold the screw to the firewall and now replacement of the filter is a one
person job. AND if you hunt around for a locking wingnut [elastic
wingnut/elastic stopnut] the entire job can be done with one person and
without any tools in about 5 minutes. But, then again I am a slow worker.
