Hi
I'm looking at replacing the 121.5 MHz ELT with a 406 MHz ELT. Is
there a recommended unit that replaces the old one with the least
amount of work and money.

Subject: | Beacon not working |
Hi
My AME reported the beacon was not working during my annual. So far I
checked the bulb, the fuse, and replaced the flashing unit. There is
power al the way to the socket but for sound reason it dies not work.
Does anyone have ideas what it could be?

Try this. It doesnt always work, but, hey, its free.
The dummy load is connected just like the beacon. Exchange the two connectors.
The beacon power supply switches between the two and therefore, maybe the one side
of the power supply has failed and the other side still works.
I have also seen a lot of corrosion in the socket. There is a Dremel tool that
can get in there and polish the surface.
Or, you can delete the flashing beacon and install a tail strobe. Then install
a flush cap.

I installed an ACK 406 in a customers plane. Its a decent ELT. A five on a 1
to 10 scale. (5/10)
The worst part is:
1) Running the wires to the back of the plane
2) The remote switch needs a battery.
3) The one I installed required a separate buzzer (included)
4) The antenna is bent and so it wont go through the dorsal like it should
(I bent the antenna so it would go through the dorsal. Why it isnt straight
is beyond me.)
5) The connector at the ELT needs to be assembled since it is designed for a separate
GPS
(This is a major pain-in-the-ass.)
