Update #3
HI Fellow Pilots and Aviation Enthusiats,
This year's fly-in looks like a real old-fashion
Great Air Show.
Eight airports, a BBQ, and lots of sponsors,
for charity.
The Charity is the "Real Bark" which is close
to my heart, as I have been flying dogs for
"Pilots N Paws for more than two years
to their new homes after being rescued from
kill shelters.
If you or someone you know may be interested,
please send this to them or give them a copy
of the poster.
Ron Millman, Grumman Tiger @ Whiteman Airport.

Gosh, it feels like I just sent out Update #2, and it is time for Update #
3 already :)
OK, just a simple change, *please use this attached flyer*, and not the one
in update #2.I have also re-attached the FAQ.
One minor change to the flyer due to a mistake by me, so would appreciate
everyone destroying the old one, and using this one instead. Sorry for the
hassle
Back to rainbows and unicorns now :)

Marc Furlong and I have been busy little elves behind the scenes trying to
put together a rather cool (and ambitious) plan for the 4th Annual
Airventurer=99s Poker Run - which will be our first run at an annual
charity
fundraiser. To recap: purpose is first and foremost to help out others
(thus the charity fundraiser part), second for our club member to have a
good reason to get up and fly their planes, and third to expand awareness
of our club and hopefully increase membership.
OK, everyone has hopefully saved the date, April 11, 2015 and told everyone
they know to put it on their calendar as wellwhat now?
We=99ve created a very cool format and hope to get the marketing roll
ing
very, very soon.but we can use some help. =9CI=99m jus
t a silly ol=99 pilot,
what can I do to help?=9D Glad you asked, here=99s the list:
1) If you know of folks in the hospitality field (eg hotel,
restaurant, resort, golf course, etc) =93 give them a ring. Tell them
we are
putting together a neat charity event, which will benefit our four legged
friends. We need door prizesa 2-night stay, a dinner for 2, a four
some on
the course, 4 tickets courtside at the Lakers, gift baskets, etc =93
let
your (and their) imagination run wild.
2) If you know someone who is working for a consumer facing company
(eg Coca Cola, Red Bull, Home Depot) =93 ask them for something to gi
ve away.
They get good brand awareness, and we get more door prizes.
We are sewing things up with the charity, which is a 501c =93 which m
eans
that all gifts and donations can be tax deductible. Yay! Do something for
others, AND reduce your tax burden. We=99re all winners here.
OK, next
Get ready to sign up yourself =93 hopefully the marketing and registr
ation
will both be open by next week.
Then
Take the flyer you will get (yes, one will be sent out to all) and print it
out and post at every airport you can find. Know someone at the local EAA
chapter?... send it to them. Know some flight schools or FBOs? ema
il it to
them to post. The more people who see it, the better the event is for all
of us. Even if they don=99t participate, they will see how cool our c
lub is,
and want to learn more.
Here=99s the basics:
- This will be an all-day (or as much of it as you want) event. As
I researched it, poker runs were designed to be fun charity fundraising
events where you get to use our motorcycle (or plane) to see the
countryside. Enjoy the day, take some time at each airport (we=99ve p
icked
some cool ones) and learn about their history, visit their museum, or snack
shop, etc. This is not a race, its more about the journey.
- We will have an end of day BBQ. We have tentative commitment
from The Condor Squadron to use their facility ! (thanks Joel for getting
that ball rolling). If that holds, our goal will be to have a celebration
BBQ, from about 4-6pm that day (we=99ll nail that down soon).
- We=99ve picked 4 airports (besides the ending one at KVNY)
to the
South (primary targets). But as a back-up plan in case of June Gloom style
weather, we have 4 more picked to the North. Yes, you can tell I am an
ex-submariner when I have that many back up plansone day ask me ho
w many
GPS units I carry in my plane :)
- We=99ve picked two special =98bonus=99 airport
s where you can get
extra cards (for extra donation to charity of course) to spice it up
- We think we have a way of tracking on a website where each
participant has been during the day =93 so you can see others as they
progress
- Our goal is to have as much of the money go to charity as
possible, so we need those door prizesboth for the winners with hi
ghest
hands, but we also have visions of a small silent auction
- Our Southern route airports can be reached by going East or
Under Bravo =93 or by going a route over LAX. I intend to put togethe
r a
youtube video (or find a good one already made) to help those who haven
=99t
taken the LAX routes beforethey are really cool. You are PIC of yo
ur own
plane, so pick the route that works best for your needs.
- We will try to figure a nice way to match flyers with
non-flyers. In other words, if someone wants to participate in the charity
event, but plane is down for an annual, or doesn=99t even own a plane
=93 we=99ll
try to connect you with others who are making the journey.
- There will be an opportunity to buy bonus cards for your hand at
the bbq for an additional donation (getting the idea yet that we want to
help raise some funds, and have fun?)
- We intend to have a plaque made that will go to the winner
=93
they get to keep for a year and then hand it over to the winner next year.
Each year the winner=99s name is added, like the Stanley Cup. Cool br
agging
rights for your hangar or office wall.
I think that=99s the basics. Lots of exciting stuff, and should be fu
nbut
requires lots of commitment and help from all. Take a look at above, if you
have suggestions or more importantly can help in some way, let Marc or I
knowwe welcome all help.
Talk to you again soon,
Robert

*Subject:* Poke Run - Save the date, April 11, 2015
I think Joel sold his Avidyne per below, thanks to those that responded. I
still have mine, please let your friends know about it so I can move them
as well. Also forgot to list a PS Engineering PMA8000B which I pulled out
during upgrade as avail.
Now for the real reason for this email .
SAVE THE DATE FOR THE POKER RUN ! =93 April 11, 2015
We will be doing a Poker Run again this year, and Mike (who we can all
attest has done an admirable job in years past) has turned the reins over
to me. I think I may get help from new members Mark and Richard as well
(we=99ll see if they can confirm). There is no sign-up for it yet, be
cause I
want to shake things up a bit. Basically as I researched Poker Runs to see
about any cool twists we could do on ours, I found lots of interesting
tidbits. I hope to incorporate those, and get our new format published
soon. Goal will be to have a traditional poker run, where we raise funds
for charity, but also see if we can use it to get more people outside the
club involved =93 driving club awareness and hopefully potential new
membership. So, we all have fun while doing what we love =93 flying,
a
charity benefits from our event, and we get potential new membership. Sound
good?
Mark the date on your calendar as booked, and look for more details soon.
Then tell all your flying friends to mark that date on their calendars as
well.
BTW =93 if you have suggestions on how to make it more interesting or
fun,
know of businesses that might want to donate door prizes, or want to
suggest cool destination airports for the event =93 drop me a line (s
ooner
rather than later).

*Subject:* Star Trek in the cockpit-Avidyne IFD540
Fellow Airventurers,
Joel and I both overbought for our needs when Avidyne offered a special
deal at OSH a few years ago. It took them a while to get the units TSO
certified, but that finally occurred and the units are now shipping out. I
have 2 of my 4 purchased installed in my plane (in case anyone wants to see
them in action). I could not be more thrilled with the units. They are plug
n play replacements for the Garmin 530/530W (although I replaced my 430W
with one of them) =93 which means little to no wiring changes if you
have
those units, plus you keep that unit to sell off if you buy one of our
Avidyne units.
Anyway, reach out to Joel or I if you have any interest at all. I have two
for sale, and he has one. Joel and I have agreed on the same pricing, so
please do not try to pit one of us against the other :) seriously,
our
goal is to get a fair return for our investment, but undersell what you
could get these units for if you bought them from the dealer. Only 3, and
we are listing elsewhere =93 so act quick =93 once they
=99re gone, they=99re gone.
Google Avidyne IFD540 to watch the videos and see specs =93 touch scr
een,
victor airways, ease of entering or changing routes (star trek cool), cross
fill if you have two, freq pop up for ease of entering, and much more.
I also have the equipment I pulled out of the plane to upgrade to the
Avidyne units for sale, let me know if you have an interest:
Garmin 430W gps/nav/com, King KX-155 nav/com (w/GS), KN64 DME, KLN 76A
xpdr, KI-209 ind w/GS
I have given all these units to my daughter (Jordan), to help her raise
funds to continue her dream of staying here in Hollywood as a make-up
artistso kinda like charity :)
OK, that=99s it =93 not trying to overwhelm folks with a sales
pitch, just
letting you all know that a fellow member has some good avionics at great
prices if you have any needs.
Over and out,
Robert
