a Ran's S-18 and a Challenger II. I love the open-air of the S-18, but the
Challenger II seems to allow for more options (like floats, doors, etc.). I think
both companies have good repts, but I'd like to know what the owner/pilots
think about their aircraft. Also, another possible one is the Talon XP. To
be honest, I have not flown any of these, but I plan to make some factory visits
someday. Thanks; Mark

I never flew a Challenger but it was the first kit I looked at seriously several
years
ago. I've seen them at every other fly-in and small field that I've been to, very
popular and I'm sure they are fine little airplanes. However, I was so impressed
when I saw the S-18 I had to take a flight at SNF. I love that airplane and would
buy
one in a second if I had the cash. Just personal opinion without having flown
both
but I think that Rans is an awesome airplane, built like a tank and great open-air.
I
sat inside the enclosed version too and was much more comfortable at 6' 2" than
in a
Challenger. Looks very slick too. Stick with the big companies for better support
and a more refined and proven airplane. Just another opinion.

Rans over Challenger any day. Check out the specs and compare.rans fuselage
are made of steel instead of Aluminum. I almost bought a challenger, instead I.
Built a Kolb FSll.There is nothing I can't repair or rebuild on my Kolb.
Good Luck

. The

see if you can get a dynamic balance done. I just got one done at the local airport
A&P for $120 and it really smoothed out my 2-blade prop. The engine ran very
smooth w/o a prop, and the prop was balanced, but with everything on there with
a
squash plate and spinner it was more vibration than I was comfortable with. Smooth
sailing now, well worth it.

Why don't you book a flight to Tampa FL over some time April 13-19th and
visit Sun & Fun. You should still be able to get a flight, but don't put
it off much longer. There are many hotels on the East side of Tampa that
should still have rooms available -from there your only about 20 miles from
the fly-in site. Be aware of the daily admission charge, it was $25 last
year for EAA members with your card and $30 for non members. Used to be if
you were going to attend for more than 3 days then the week pass came out
cheaper. There is camping if that what your prefer. This way you can look
at planes and see them first hand and flying. Call the manufacturer first
and see if they intend to exhibit.
The Challenger I is a nice plane but the C-II is known to have some yaw
stability issues. Rans planes are strong airplanes but one thing I have
noticed there hasn't been to many walkaway in recent crashes. I would not
be overly concerned with the persons comment about aluminum versus steel -
many old "aluminum" Cessnas are still flying today. The only thing I can
comment on the Talon XP is it doesn't appear they have a web site, their
not well known, and you don't see many of them. That can prove to be kit
delivery and part availability problems down stream. You'll have to do
some home work there. Don't discount the CGS Hawk 2-place, it's a good flyer.
