If you meant the former, yeah, I'll agree that was nuts not to buy them at $60 a pop. I mean $130 is pretty cheap but for TWO that is nuts! Roland M. That is pretty cheap, either way. And, technically, that's $65 a pop Roland. : P

--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: John Gribble <johngribble@comcast.net> I think this is my first post on this list, but anyway I was thinking of taking a consensus about other user's experience with the various Sony changers in existence. I'm thinking about going with the CDX-828 or perhaps the 838 even though it's quite gaudy looking to me being that red and all. This is intended to be used with my C90/4000 combo so it would be just optical. I've read somewhere that the 828 is a better quality unit than the later ones that came after that, but I'm not able to find any concurrence with anyone else. Thanks for any suggestions or other options that would be offered. John

--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: "Roland M" <mdx400@hotmail.com> Hey there, welcome to the list. I am fairly new to the list as well... Anyhow I actually just answered your question a few emails ago... The CDX-715,727,805,828,838 and 848 all share the same pickup. (AFAIK) The pickup was updated at some time in the model years because the replacement part for some of the changers indicates (as per Sony) that the "original part has been replaced". The updated pickup is the KSS-521A/K1RP. The "non-original part" is noted on models up to the CDX-828. I'm thinking they actually changed it part way through and some 828s might have the updated pickup. However there isn't anything wrong with the older pickup--the CDX-715 and 805 are built like tanks pretty much--nothing usually goes wrong with them (at least that has been my observation). The CDX-828 and CDX-838 are otherwise identical except, as you noted, the colour of the changer. The 848X only differs in it's exterior design (which is kind of "out there" if you ask me). Only the 8 series changers have the optical output (as you are probably aware) and the 7 series feature the Digital D-Bass circuit (which is of no use to mobile ES users anyhow). The 715 and 805 are equipped with ESP and the later models have Advanced ESP (not much difference really). Other than those differences they are all the same thing inside. Any of the changers with optical out will serve you fine, I'm sure.
