The XA-D210/D211 is a proprietary adapter that changes and ELECTRICAL signal from the "UniLink Digital Out" minijack to an Optical (Toslink) signal. Further, though it maybe that the "UniLink Digital Out" signal is actually n the S/PDIF (electrical) format you can't use a standard coax->optical converter because the jack for the XA-D210/D211 is not a standard RCA-type coax jack. It is actually a "3-contact" minijack + an "outer ring" ground (some of those 3 contacts provide the power for the optical transmitter in the adapter). Those are only available from Sony. The right-angle ones from MCM might help you out in tight spots as to not damage the fiber cable.
