--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: "M Piccin" <mpiccin2@hotmail.com>
Hi, I just joined this emailing list and hopefully you all can answer
questions that I have about the 4000x. Well, I'd like to know what the
output voltage of the 4000x is. Becuase if you go the the sony website it
says 4Volts and in the 2002 Sony brochure (the one with the Ford Focus on
the cover) is says 8Volts (BTW, check out how they spelt their own name
wrong on that page also...haha). I have a C90 via fibre optic to the 4000x
(in my trunk) and I have a C91 CD changer via f/o also. I need to know the
voltage cause I need a really good signal for my two Phoenix Gold ZPA 0.5
amps (one for the sub one for the components) which require an 8volts signal
(they usually require line drivers).
Thanks,
Mike

Another quick question....since I have the fibre optic cable which channel
(front or rear) is the RCA for the am/fm reception supposed to go? I put it
on the fronts but I seem to be getting noise only when the radio is on, but
no noise when the CD is playing.

you need to go to the c90 unit and turn the digital output ON.
I think you can do this through the wireless remote w/ setup, but if not,
you need to reset the unit.
There is a small button there after you detach the face which you can hit
with a small pen or screwdriver

Hey,
Front output in this case is used for radio output (not xm or dab unless
you are running with analogue and through the c90's bus in).
So it's simply your line out for the tuner, or a changer/aux IF you have
it hooked up to the bus audio in on the c90.... Everything EXCEPT the CD
transport on the c90r and other source hooked up directly to the
xdp-4000x.
You can hook your changer(s)/XM Radio/DAB/aux directly to the xdp-4000x
without using bus audio in on the head unit via the optical or analogue
inputs.
Hope that makes sense,
Pete

Hi there,
Either one should work ok, I'd wire it to the fronts, but
the rears should work just as well.

You can hook your changer(s)/XM Radio/DAB/aux directly to the xdp-4000x
without using bus audio in on the head unit via the optical or analogue
inputs.
If I wanted to hook an iPOD to my system how would I go about doing this? From
what Iunderstand from what you wrote I can dirctly plug it into the RCA changer
input of the 4000x.

Yes, you can connect the ipod up to the xdp-4000x or the c90r's bus
in..... BUT in order for this to be done properly you need the sony
XA-300 source selector that allows line inputs, usb audio inputs and
gives you a headphone jack.
If you just want to see how well it works you can trick the xdp into
thinking it is the cd player or another part on your system. i.e. select
tuner as the source and play the ipod through the tuners input on the
xdp. So in this case replace the front channel line out on the c90 with
the ipod's output and plug it into the analogue input on the xdp. See if
its any good, which it will be if done right, then go and buy the xa-300
and have a proper aux selection.
Remember that the xdp will only play through the analogue inputs when
you have analogue selected for the cd player (if using the cd player as
the source - use the radio its simpler). This is why I suggested using
the tuner as a dummy source as not to have to change the cd source back
and fro from analogue to digital and so on.
I have had a PC sound card connect optically at 48 kHz and it works
nicely.
Try it out
Pete

You hook it into the A front. the xdp4000 senses what is on automatically.

How is it possible for a pc sound card to be connected digitally to the unit
at 48khz? The standard cd frequency resolution runs at 44.1khz. To me, it
doesn't sound like that should work at all. I can see at 44.1 khz, but not
48. Just curious, I guess. Another ?. Is the source selector still
available for purchase, or is this something that I'd have to look on ebay
or elsewhere for?

Well the source selector is available in places in the UK, its about
70-100 here, probably the same in dollars for you guys! Not sure about
availability in the USA, I saw one on eBay for $80 once.
Right in relation to the 44.1 KHz CD standard and the xdp-4000x:
It's simple really the xdp's dac's are 20 bit, cd's are 16 Bit but the
20 Bit allows for better audio because of factors such as over sampling
and error correction. The 20 Bit DAC is an example that the specs can be
misleading, people would assume it would be a 16 Bit DAC knowing the
cd's specified as 16 Bit.
The DAC's in the xdp are the Crystal Semiconductor CS4329 D/A
converters, delta-sigma type. They are capable of up to 48 KHz and this
is why it works. Nothing to right home about, most good cd player or md
recorders use dac's that work at 48 Khz.
I wonder if these could be replaced with dac's suitable for dvd - audio
(2 channel high quality audio). This would probably require further
changes to the digital filters and the main processing chip, but for
anybody that comprehensively understands the inner workings of the xdp,
is this REALISTICALLY possible to do?
I would like to future proof the c90 and xdp-4000x combo if at all
possible.
However, I would like better crossover points for the tweet mid more!
2.5 kHz would be ideal for me!
Rgds,
Pete
