Subject: | Sony mobile UniLink TV Tuners... |
--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: "Roland M" <mdx400@hotmail.com>
Just wondering how many people had any of the Sony Mobile TV Tuner/monitor
output UniLink devices in their system?
The two main models are the XT-U400V and the XT-40V (which are both the same
thing except later Sony dropped the "U" from UniLink products as time went
on and everything became UniLink).
Recently though, I've realised that there was actually another UniLink TV
tuner/monitor driver out there called the XT-U500V which is apparently
better than the XT-U400V/XT-40V tuner... The U500V has diversity input for
4 antennas instead of just one antenna. The only other difference I can see
(besides the shape) is that the U500V has both an "LCD output" (for use with
those older Sony mobile LCDs like the XVM-42) and has a separate "CRT
output" (which is standard composite video in a DIN connector though)
instead of having one DIN connector and a switch for changing between
LCD/CRT like the 40V has.
Anyhow, funny enough, usually XT-U400V/XT-40V tuners end up at $100 US or
more on eBay but recently I saw a few U500Vs on eBay and they end up
cheaper! I saw one end at about $50 and another one end at $50 (the 2nd one
was an "as-is" one though) and then I ended up buying one myself for about
$60 on eBay which is a deal for a better tuner than the 40V which goes for
more. I guess not many people know of the U500V and don't buy it.
Anyhow there is another one on eBay right now that is from the "as-is"
seller in that second auction I mentioned. He said he has several so he
might even have another auction after this one. Don't know if his are in
working condition (he doesn't know either) but I just thought I'd let people
here know in case they were interested. (I'm buying mine from a different
seller by the way so I can't comment on the "as-is" models that this guy is
selling).
Does anyone own an XT-U500V? How is it? I'm not thinking of using it right
away as I've yet to get an LCD for the car. However I know the UniLink
tuners have character generation and the LIST feature will display all 10
things on the monitor at once which is cool, right?

--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: "Roland M" <mdx400@hotmail.com>
Oh, sorry I forgot I had another couple Sony mobile TV questions...
First of all those that have the TV tuner probably know that there is a
proprietary mini-DIN connector to connect the monitor (the U500V has 2: one
for LCD and the other for CRT; the U400V/40V has 1 and a switch for CRT/LCD
modes). Anyhow there is a cable (accessory) called the RC-70 which extracts
regular (RCA connectors) compostite video and L/R audio from the TV tuner.
The price of the cable is $30 US but I was wondering if there was a way to
make my own or get one cheaper? Does anyone know the "pin-out" of the TV
Tuner mini-DIN monitor output connector? (This information would also be in
the service manual if anyone has one).
Also I'm thinking of getting a Sony LCD (apparently Sony is still serious
about making displays at least--theirs have more resolution and look better
than similarly sized models from competitors). I might wait until the
XVM-H65 6.5" LCD comes out (which is a slightly larger version of the XVM-6
5.8" LCD) in hopes that it costs around the same ($210 US on eBay). Does
anyone know when the XVM-H65 will be available? Does it replace the XVM-6
or is it another model in the line-up?

I meant XVM-H65 and XVM-H6 not XVM-6, sorry about that.

I bought an XT-40V, but I haven't hooked it up yet. I still have to buy a monitor
(looking for a 7" widescreen... I think I'm going to go with an Audiobahn w/remote
on eBay for $250) and install the monitor in a custom fiberglass center
console beneath the dash. It'll be awhile before I have the setup done. I paid
quite a bit for my XT-40V, $175 after shipping. It somewhat upsets me to learn
about this U500V. :(

I have a XT-40V connected to a XVM-50 Sony monitor. When you connect the
XT-40V to the Unilink System it displays the CD timing and track info,
Custom file info. I've got the TV connected to switched accessory lead so it
turns off & on with the ignition. Interestingly enuff, the TV will not come
on until there is a signal present. I don't know if it will display CD Text
'cause my C90 is in for service (waiting for Sony B-stock). I have the
MDX-65 & CDX-838 connected in the system, it displays MD titles up to so
many characters, no scrolling. The XT also takes the LIST function which
would normally come up on the HU display and puts it on the screen. In the
manual Sony mentions a XT500V also.

The XT-40V was the only tuner that supplied all graphics generation for a
uni-link system when there is a Mini Disc player included in the system. It
would follow that the XM tuner would also not display as early head units
"see" the XM tuner as a MiniDisc source.
The XT-U500V is a far better TV tuner, if that is the reason for getting it.
However, for simply displaying information on a screen and allowing a video
input the XT-40V is more versatile.
Sony video monitors, in my opinion are below average with the others in the
market. Especially when you consider price. The display is decent straight
on, but even 15 degrees off center and the display becomes washed out.

So the XT-U500V cannot do the character generation? That is too bad, I was
hoping to enjoy that feature :( Oh well, at least it wasn't a bad deal at
only $70 US with shipping, right?

Really? You think so? I agree that they are a little overpriced, but I've
seen the newer Sony LCDs and think that they are pretty good. (The 5.8"
widescreen XVM-H6 costs about the same as an off-brand 7" widescreen.) The
other thing I like is that Sony offers mostly 16:9 widescreen models for
monitors--I don't see the point in getting a 4:3 LCD because if playing DVDs
is the main function in car (as it usually is) 4:3 is a waste of $$$.
I know there are tons of the cheaper off-brand ones on eBay but the Sony
ones have more resolution for the same screen sizes for the most part...
I'll have to take a look again before buying one as I don't really remember
about the off-centre viewing quality. Any Active Matrix TFT LCD should not
fade or wash out when going off centre, though.

As I said earlier, I have a XVM-50 mounted in the ashtray/dc outlet location
in my '96 Chevy Blazer. The monitor is a CRT and it works fine. You can see
it from any angle. The sunlight very seldom washes it out, I have tinted
windows. If anything the display helps because the displays on the C910 &
C90 are the worst in daylight. Also if anyone finds a RC-66 cable (connects
the XT-40V and TV power box), please drop me an email.

Subject: | Accepting the Truth of the 4000x |
--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: "Patrick Freeland" <ultra_19@hotmail.com>
Hello everyone,
As I have settled into feeling the love and joy of the 4000x, the
parametric flexability, the time allignment, the level settings, and varius
additional options like muting and the great D/A's, I have also finally come
to accept its limitations.
Obviously, those are...as all of you have already thought....the
crossover points and the oddity in the lacking of all three (24/36/72)
varius slope settings for each output. Due to the 4000x, I was luckly able
to set some of these settings at full range and compensate these undesirable
levels with the JL amp crossover settings. Some of you may remember my
questions earlier in the months running multiple crossovers in line with the
unit. Thanks for everyone's input. Due to my amps quality crossovers and
slopes, I have a plethora of options. I ended up crossing over my my
mid-bass and midrange at around 250 (flexible in both directions)and my sub
and mid-bass point at 65 (also flexible).... everything else I used the
4000x. By using the amps crossovers in conjunction with the 4000x's
crossovers, I was able to take the best from both. My resulting stereo
image has drastically been improved, sharpened, and defined. The sound is
much more differentiated from left to right, and much more midbass material
is present in the music. I was uneasy with giving up some of my 4000x
settings (preamped of coarse) for my amp's crossovers. But when I did this
and experimented with it, I heard a suprisingly huge difference. I guess I
am writing this to all of you who don't want to let go of some of the 4000x
crossover settings. But using the 4000x in conjunction with your amps
(assuming the amps have a good crossover and slope) may make a very definate
difference, as it did in my car. Obviousely, some of you may be saying,
"Well no due, Sherlock." But I guess I have more recently accepted the
downsides of the 4000x.
So for some of you out there who have finally gotten your hands on one
of these beautiful machines, take the best of it and compensate for where it
lacks......the 4000x is not perfect. Perhaps one day sony will stop caring
so much about profit, and discover that they want to continue to be the
leader in technology, thus reactivating the higher end line of car audio
products....so we pray.
