Yes,
Steve Head definately comes to mind! They had a
really cool segment on "Horsepower TV" on TNN a few
months back - and they showed his civic with the C-90
"Steath Mounted" in the console with the faceplate
mounted seperately in the dash. They had completely
re-built the dashboard to be 100% symmetrical and
incorporated a 3-way main L/R speaker pod into the
dash at chest level. I can only imagine what the
imaging and soundstage was like in there with the
XDP-4K running true 4-way! He even had a laptop
permanentely hooked up with a built-in touch-mousepad
in the cosole and a display in the dash. Realtime
control of the XDP-4K at the touch of a finger! That
is really cool!
In my opninon, The XDP-4000X is matched only by the
more expensive Alpine F-1 series, and this is only due
to Alpine's current support for DTS and Dolby 5.1 as
well as HDCD decoding. As far as regular old 44.1K/16
bit audio goes, they are practically dead even. The
Sony offers the FFR crossover, BUT the Alpine is so
much more versitile in the frequency selection! Damn
you, Sony! Alpine also has DVD-Navigation, which my
dumb-ass really needs.
I am still a die-hard Sony fan (for now) with 2 mobile
"ES" systems and 3 home "ES" systems with a combined
(car and home) total of 627 disc CD storage and 4250
RMS watts of raw "ES" power (not to mention an
additional 1500watts of Rockford sub power in my truck
and 2600 watts of CROWN power in my PA system). We
will see how much more "Sony B.S." I can put up with
before I am FORCED to switch to Alpine F-1 for my ride
and to Denon or Adcom (Or simular) audiophile home
systems (plural!).
Sony is slacking in the true "Audiophile" market
lately - well, besides their HEAVY investment with
SACD - both in the high-end players and the SACD
productions/promotions themselves. There are a few
players that will play SACD as well as DVD-A formats,
but you can bet the bank that Sony will NEVER embrace
the idea of DVD-A, no matter what their loss or gain.
(Loss)
It seems the "New Sony" will only promote what they
can monopolize lately. I guess that is smart for
marketing and ultimately their survival as a company,
but I want my Audiophile Sony "ES" gear back and "New
and Improved"! Give me some new "ES" home-audio
seperates with 7.1 and 192KHz capability and I will
snap it up in a heartbeat! Give me a legitimate DTS
5.1/SACD replacement for the XDP-4000X and I will
ABSOLUTELY snap it up!
Now there is an idea for Sony to ponder - SACD in car
audio! Ding...

I agree whole-heartedly... only I cannot afford Alpine F1. I'm simply a pizza delivery
boy that drives a little '95Honda Civic and knows good musical reproductionwhen
he hears it. I'm in the car a lot, so good audio equipment is a must
for me. That's why I was really excited when Matt was working on new 4kX software...
Maybe some day I'll find a better, affordable solution to the 4kX limitations.
It will also be hard to replace the C90... Antiskip (ESP) should be in 80% of
the market's decks, not 2%.

Steve Head is the first person that I always think
of when it comes to the 4000X. He uses a C90 with
his. You can see his install pics on his website.

His is the green Honda Civic. I think there are some
others that use these, but I don't know them very
well.

Steve is an excellent example, not to mention a great guy.
Anthony Davis is another. This year he won SLAP finals, was 2nd in IASCA
finals, and won USAC finals. His system starts with a C-90 then a XDP-4000X
and 4 Xtant amplifiers. A very clean, basic setup.
Tyrone Chestnut, the "Godfather" of IASCA competition, also uses both
pieces with great success.
There are other options, besides the Alpine setup. The Pioneer P-9 setup is
extremely versatile, with much better crossover points. And yes, will work
with their navigation system, which is in my opinion, the best on the
market. With the Pioneer, you can even add their dvd changer, use the same
remote, and not suffer the delay through the processor.

When I listen to CDs (not burned ones) I get popping and crackling sometimes
through my speakers. I don't have noise (at least I can't hear it) and I
can't figure out what casue this. Sometimes it happens as I'm chanign the
volume.
BTW I have C90 hooked via fibre-optic to 4000x then crappy RCAs to Line
driver to both amps.
Thanks,
Mike

I kinda had a similar noise coming from my system when i first installed the
Used XDP4K...... What i did was reset the system bus and then re-upload
the files to the XDP unit and it cleared it up for me...... Give that a
shot...... hope it works out.. Also, get better RCA's to the amps :)

I also had the problem when I started using the newer version of DSC....so I
reverted back to the original DSC and it solved the problem.....I think there
are a lot of bugs in that newer version
