Dan is correct...
The connection is NOT a coaxial conection, but a propritery
miniplug/coaxial converter
to a toslink jack...
The part number is XA-D211 or XA-D212. Usually can be had for $50bux

As Dan said, the XA-D210/211 is theadaptor that Sony sells and uses for the coax.
to optical conversion. I don't know the schematics of the adaptor, but some
how it converts the coax signal into electrical optical. I don't think anything
else will work. I believe they sell for $30 to $40. Sometimes they can be on
backorder.

My mistake, no coax.connection, just an electrical to optical converter.

I went down to 'the' high-end car audio place outside of philly to
audition some dyn's and they informed me they had this.
I just saw and heard it yesterday, so it's no joke, they are legit. This
gear is on a whole nother level from anything I have ever seen/heard for
car audio.
It's not real clear in the ad, but it's the head unit, changer/processor,
tweeter/mid pair, 3 dual monoblock amps, and 2 subs.

Yep, indeed the D210/D211 is the part like everyone said. I'm pretty sure
the format of the digital signal is coax S/PDIF but in a non-standard
connector... The XA-D211 is too small to be converting the signal from
anything else but electrical S/PDIF (coax) to optical (Toslink).
For the person interested the D210/211 has a miniplug with 3 "lines"
(creating 4 contact points) plus a grounding "ring" like the outer sheild of
an RCA cable. I THINK that is right, or maybe it was a 2 "line" miniplug?
The reason for all the contacts is simple and the conversion process is just
a regular coax--->optical conversion, I'm pretty sure. The optical emitter
in the adapter needs power, so it gets something like +5V for that signal
and there are two grounds if I recall correctly from the service manual (I
had to do a small fix on the optical out board on my MDX-400 as the
connector to the main board had some of its solder points damaged). Anyhow
I think there are two grounds (actually I guess 3 if you count the sheild?)
and then there is the digital signal and +5V for the emitter. The thing is
I don't know how they correspond to the the points on the miniplug part of
the adapter :(
As another note, I'm not quite sure why they changed the model from the D210
to the D211 (I don't know what change/"fix" there was) but mine is a D210
and it works fine.

Thanks Roland, now, can anybody tell me which of the "4 connecting points"
on the plug is the S/PDIF signal? I think that I can manage to adapt it to
my converter.

Anybody know if this "mini-plug" with 4 contacts is similar to the ones used
to carry audio stereo (2 contacts plus ground) and video (one more contact
using the same ground) in some portable DVD players, for example?
I think that I can manage to find this plug in some Audio store. I could
confirm that the ouside of the socket is the same ground connected on the
inside (from the 4 contacts in the mini-plug, it is the same than the one
which is closer to tha cable).
Thanks guys

Dont know if it was clear: I mean if this plug (the one on the XA-D210, 211
or 212) is similar to the miniplugs with 4 contacts used to connect some A/V
devices.
Thanks
