Why all of this discussion. Sony has the right part, it is cheap and you
know it will work. Am I missing something? I'm a do it myselfer too, but
that is just silly. One hour of my time is worth more than the part costs.

I live in Argentina and here Sony does not sell this part.
Buying it directly would generate a cost of 2X or even 3X; add to that the
fact that my country got its currency de-valued a year ago from 1:1 to
1:3,5 and you get a price at least 7X the one you pay there.
Simple reson, hu..?
Besides, not even 30 hours of my work are worth that; Im a student and have
free time.

Well, just came back from the Audio store and confirmed that the plug is
totally diferente than the 4 contacts one used in A/V applications (besides
the external ground).
The only think left is to buy the one from Sony : (

Anybody know if this "mini-plug" with 4 contacts is similar to the ones used
to carry audio stereo (2 contacts plus ground) and video (one more contact
using the same ground) in some portable DVD players, for example?
I think that I can manage to find this plug in some Audio store. I could
confirm that the ouside of the socket is the same ground connected on the
inside (from the 4 contacts in the mini-plug, it is the same than the one
which is closer to tha cable).
Thanks guys

Yep, indeed the D210/D211 is the part like everyone said. I'm pretty sure
the format of the digital signal is coax S/PDIF but in a non-standard
connector... The XA-D211 is too small to be converting the signal from
anything else but electrical S/PDIF (coax) to optical (Toslink).
For the person interested the D210/211 has a miniplug with 3 "lines"
(creating 4 contact points) plus a grounding "ring" like the outer sheild of
an RCA cable. I THINK that is right, or maybe it was a 2 "line" miniplug?
The reason for all the contacts is simple and the conversion process is just
a regular coax--->optical conversion, I'm pretty sure. The optical emitter
in the adapter needs power, so it gets something like +5V for that signal
and there are two grounds if I recall correctly from the service manual (I
had to do a small fix on the optical out board on my MDX-400 as the
connector to the main board had some of its solder points damaged). Anyhow
I think there are two grounds (actually I guess 3 if you count the sheild?)
and then there is the digital signal and +5V for the emitter. The thing is
I don't know how they correspond to the the points on the miniplug part of
the adapter :(
As another note, I'm not quite sure why they changed the model from the D210
to the D211 (I don't know what change/"fix" there was) but mine is a D210
and it works fine.

Really? I thought it was pretty close, myself... Guess Sony made sure to
make it different enough so that you HAVE to buy theirs :(
As for it being cheap--I think the adapter is a little expensive, even
buying it in the US. But not because of the price, but because it is
obvious that Sony could have just built the optical emitter into the HUs
that have "UniLink Digital Out", just like the various changers with optical
output have.
$30 US isn't that bad, but if you could use a $15 Coax-->Optical converter
and a miniplug connector that costs a few bucks to "extract" the S/PDIF
signal from the connection on the HU, you'd net the same thing but with a
likely brighter signal (better for longer runs). But you can't do it
because Sony's miniplug is slightly different.
I guess since the little D210/211 adapter is so small and does the
conversion to optical in a compact area, $30 isn't so bad. Still I think
Sony should have built the emitter in...
