Hi,
Is there any advantage to using an audiophile quality fiber cable
over a generic kind, or is it just a gimmick?
I'm moving things around and need a longer cable, but do not know if
there is a real advantage in getting like a Monster Lightspeed 200 or
Reference cable over something cheap, or if it's justified in the
price.
Any comments welcome, especially ones on personal experience with
different cables. Any recommendations also welcome. Thanks.

Personally, I use a standard cable from a parts supplier, nothing special. I think
the overal construction is better with the high-end cables, flexibility of
the cable. The ability to pass light, the transparency of the cable itself.

Re
Really? Because I thought the time-alignment was for exactly that in the
first place! I know the XDP-210EQ has time alignment but I thought on the
XDP-4000X it was PHASE Alignment and used to correct/compensate for phase
differences in the driver locations.
I may inded be incorrect about that (since I don't have an XDP-4kX) but I
thought that was another one of the advantages of the 4000X over the 210EQ.
If you aren't using the time (phase?) alignment feature it won't really
affect it because you aren't using it though! I thought that you were
supposed to be able to adjust everything with the 4kX and leave the speaker
wires all as "in-phase", but again, I'm not sure about that.

Is the head unit getting it's power from the preamp through unilink?
When you use it as slave, do you use the preamp or just the master?

The "head unit" part which I usually refer to as the "in-dash" or "changer"
part (because I'm actually using a different head or master unit in the
system), is connected like any regular changer right through a UniLink
cable.
It can either be connected to the HU itself or (XDP unit in the case of an
EQ) or to a multi-changer adapter (MCA)--it is just like any changer. I
currently have mine connected to a multi-changer adapter.
The pre-amp unit is not used unless you want the MDX-400 to be the MASTER
unit. I.e. If you use the MDX-400 as a changer the pre-amp is NOT used.
I actually noticed that my unit draws quite a bit of current from the
UniLink bus but I'm almost certain this is because the optical pickup is
weak and consumes a lot of power just to keep going. When I come to think
of it (and also because it happened the other day) I have actually had on
occasion, the entire system go blank and then restart as if you had turned
the ignition on and off. No settings are lost (so it isn't like you
disconnected the battery) but it does happen now and again. The system
resumes within a couple seconds right where it left off.
This MAY be because the MDX-400 is drawing more current than the changer
adapter allows and its over current "protection" is kicking in. However I
suspect that this little occurence happens probably because there may be a
small problem in the power wiring on my MCA becuause I hooked it up in
winter and didn't have the actual Sony plug for the power on it so it isn't
the best connection right now. I'll have to check this out when it gets a
little warmer.
The times when I had the MDX-400 connected directly to the HU (or to the
XDP-210EQ) without the MCA, I never noticed this problem at all. So I'm
pretty sure it is the MCA that is the problem.

Another note I should add about the MDX-400 as-a-changer setup:
I think that I have pointed this out before, but I'll say it again.
The MDX-400 is a very nice unit, especially in terms of its "coolness"
factor. However despite this unit's original MSRP of abou $1400 US and
quality components used in most of the system there is a definite and KNOWN
problem with the optical pickup (laser).
The life of it is NOT satisfactory, especially considering the original
MSRP. It is very nice to have one, but even if you were to buy a brand new
one (which is almost IMPOSSIBLE to find though there was one on eBay about a
month ago that was probably the last unused unit that will ever be seen!).
But even with a brand new unit the pickup will likely start to fail within a
few years as has been reported by different users on the MD-Amulation
mailing list in the past. Several users even report that the unit was sent
in under warranty, the pickup replaced and the problem returned after a
couple years.
The cost of the pickup is $160 US without installation and adjustment! Sony
offers a flat-rate $125 repair on the unit though but that expires in 2004
as the unit will reach its 7-year out-of-service date. The KMS-151 pickup
was revised at some point (to the KMS-151A) so it may be more reliable than
it was (making refurb units possible more reliable than new ones, though
finding a "new" refurb would be just as hard as finding a new one anyway),
but I still have the feeling that it isn't a big improvement.
I'm thinking about sending my unit to Sony USA for the $125 flat rate repair
because mine is definitely on its last legs :( I like the unit very much
and there are certain aspects I really like such as the dual-display which
is helpful when it is sunny out (the MDX-400 had the old, very visible
screen on it).
But really, though, if you want a reliable (and better) MD changer I'd have
to recommend the MDX-65 which will not only give many years of service, it
also has the optical out like the 400, has a better ATRAC revision than the
old ATRAC 2.0 in the 400, and is cartridge-less and allows changing of 5 of
the discs while the 6th is playing. If you need MDLP, the MDX-66XLP is your
only choice, but unfortunately the unit does NOT have the optical output
that the MDX-65 did.

Dear Listers,
Neil Hulin of the Zenith-List at Matronics wrote to me suggesting I add a
"total of available messages" column to the 7-Day List Browse Main page,
and it seemed like a great idea! I've made the modifications and I think
many will find it extremely helpful as well. Have a look at the following URL:
