Hi Bobby,
For the C910/C900/XRC-900, the volume control goes from 0(lowest) to
63(highest)
I'd guess it's the opposite way on the C90's...
You could say that I'm nit-picking...but if some of us are in
competition, and if we are
really aiming for SQ, then the last thing you'd need is any sort of
noise. Perhaps my unit
was the only one that made noise, as well as some other units. But,
there are others that
have experienced the same problem.
I'd even possibly factor the deck, but I did end up running no inputs
into the 210, and
the noise was still there...*shrug* I have yet to hear a quiet 210, and
if you have one,
it's worth it's weight in gold! Heck, when the unit was plugged in, it
was a pleasure to
have!
Actually, now that I think about it, I do have a friend that owns an
XDP-210/CDX-C90
combo. I'm going by his place on the weekend, so I might test drive his
rig to see if he has
a clean unit or not.
No offense to anyone that already has the XDP-210...if it works for you,
then that's all
that matters in the end. It just didn't work for me. :-)

The C90 has higher quality internals, circuit design and better D/As. The
better D/As, however are not an issue if you are comparing the C910 +
XDP-4kX and C90 + XDP-4kX (using the digital connection) as they will both
use the D/As in the 4000X.
The C90 also offers the "DVOL" (direct volume) mode which I'm not sure that
the C910 has. This mode disables all the bass/treble settings and any
unnecessary sound circuitry from the signal path. Again, I think using the
XDP this is eliminated again. (I'm not 100% sure on that but I think DVOL
is only avail. when no XDP unit is connected.)
Other main features the C90 has would be the nice AMS lever and SOURCE
button in the middle of the volume knob. Also the C90 (like other units
with SOURCE and MODE buttons) the C90 can switch tuner bands with the mode
button as well as between multiple changers. The XR-C900/CDX-C910 that
don't have a MODE button so you have to use the SOURCE button to cycle
through EVERYTHING you have. So it goes AM,FM1,FM2,CD1,CD2,CDx,MD1,MDx,etc.
The C90 (and the other units made later with the mode button) simply
switch between Tuner/CD/MD and while in each SOURCE "area" you press mode to
change tuner bands or changer numbers.
The above might look like only a cosmetic difference but clearly the MODE
button saves cycling through every source. I also find the AMS lever to be
very ergonomic/easy to use.
The other things I can think of are that the C90 reads CD-TEXT from CDs in
the unit and also can read CD-TEXT info from a CD-TEXT capable changer
(CDX-727,805,828,838,etc.) Though neither the C910 or C90 can read ID3 tags
from an "MX" (MP3) changer (but they both can control one as with any
UniLink HU).
The second feature is that the C90 supports XM tuner control. This one
seems to be a big one for some people.
Some of the above reasons (MODE button,centre-SOURCE,AMS Knob, and CD-TEXT)
may seem like small things, but they are actually all the same reasons why I
changed from my XR-C900 to the XR-C9100. As an added bonus (for me) the
C9100 actually has a more legible-in-sunlight screen, though not by much.
I did actually sacrifice a couple of things the C900 had that were better
than the C9100 though; whereas on the C910 to C90 switch the only thing you
sacrifice really is the already bad screen for an even worse one(?).
I don't know if I missed anything else that the C90 has (or doesn't have)
compared to the C910, but that at least gives you the main ones.

XDP-4000X was never an Xplod unit, that's why its gone. Plain as day, on
the unit it says Mobile ES. Not to mention being around well before the
start of the Xplod line.
Both the U50D and the 210 have a hiss problem, but are still decent entry
level units.

(Well I'm not Bobby but...) I can see what you are saying about the
noise... However, I must say this noise has to be completely inaudible if
there was acutally music playing, right? I guess it is somewhat
unacceptable if you were paying $500 for one but since I paid less than $150
for my 210EQ I think the benefits of it outweigh the small "noise" everyone
is talking about.

Well no offence taken for me (XDP-210EQ user) at least ;)
Hmm, you know what just because everyone is mentioning this noise now I
think I'm gonna try it out and see on mine. I'm guessing that I will hear
the dreaded noise though since it appears to affect every unit. But I still
think it is a bit of an overreaction because when music is actually there
I'm sure you can't pick it up.
Well at least I haven't heard the noise in normal use yet. Then again I
haven't heard the noise at all. Hopefully when I do the test and hear the
noise I won't all-of-a-sudden be able to pick it up all the time! :( Then
I'd be mad!
The only thing is I wonder how high I have to turn it before I hear it. I
remember on my XR-C900 it had the volume "bar" and also the number
displayed. On the XR-C9100 there is only one-line so I just get a bar, no
numbers. I'm thinking it should be about 3/4 the way up then?

Take a look at any catalog from the first year of Xplod. In the beginning
(first few years of Xplod) there was "Xplod" and "Xplod mobile ES". There
was still mobile ES eventhough they were also Xplod models.
Models that fall under the Xplod mobile ES series included models like the
CDX-7050X, CDX-8050X, MDX-8500X, XR-M550, XM-7527, XM-7547, XM-7557 AND the
XDP-4000X and others. Even the legendary XM-2000R was actually an Xplod
mobile ES product. It is right there in the first year Xplod mobile ES
catalogues/brouchures!!!
All those models I listed were of the Xplod mobile ES series (there were
plenty more) and none of them are available anymore. Does that mean they
aren't Xplod models simply because they aren't available anymore? That
makes no sense at all.
The CDX-C90 was even "carried over" into Xplod ES and they even changed the
box on the "2nd gen" C90 to an Xplod series box. Since the C90 came out
before Xplod, though I wouldn't call it an Xplod model.
Further more Sony NEVER really used "X" at the END of ANY model numbers
UNTIL Xplod started. So believe what you want but the XDP-4000X IS an Xplod
model. Why else would it appear, clear as day in the Xplod mobile ES
brochures/catalogues? Why else would it have an "X" after it, exactly like
the (very low-end) CDX-C4000X did? Just find a Sony mobile brochure from
when the XDP-4000X came out--it will be an Xplod mobile ES brochure.

When the 4000x came out there was no Xplod line it was Mobile ES. Xplod
came later and was used as the name for all car audio pieces, the Mobile ES
stuff was all carry over designs, but was car audio, thus Xplod. Mobile ES
was always a separate line from anything else.
A Mobile ES dealer could get anything from the line, but not all dealers
could get Mobile ES.
Mobile ES was going away and with the line so small they didn't print up two
separate catalogs.

Hmm, maybe I should clarify my last post a little. Perhaps the processor
did come out before Xplod BUT...
I never saw the XDP-4000X before the start of the Xplod line, personally but
if it was then it may have been "carried-over" into Xplod like the C90 was.
But that still doesn't explain the "X" on the end that has no other place
than in the Xplod line.
From what I remember it came out with the Xplod line and was an Xplod unit.
However if it was out before the Xplod line I suspect that it might have
actually been the "1st" Xplod model. That might be why the unit got the "X"
on the end. Later when Sony realised how crappy their new products really
were they might have backed out of the Xplod concept for the XDP-4000X.
Needless to say if it wasn't an Xplod model (i.e. it was out before the
Xplod line) it was at least a "carried over" Xplod model like the C90 was
(no cosmetic changes or anything but still was promoted under the Xplod
mobile ES line).

I have a like new 210eq sitting in my closet, with box, manual, unilink
cable, well, everything that it came with if anyone's interested. This unit
is in mint shape, will take pictures if anyone is really that interested.
And just a note, the 210eq did come with 20 bit d/a's. Burr Brown 20 bit
d/a's in fact. I liked the unit, but obviously, when I bought a 4000x I had
to put it aside. Let me know if you're interested.

U50D - Has a 1-bit DAC
210EQ - Has tri 20-bit burr brown DACs
4000x - Has quad 24-bit Crystal DACs
C910 - Has dual 20-bit burr brown DACs
C90 - Has dual 20-Bit burr brown DACs
The 4000x is by far the best DSP but the 210 is still good and worth having.
I would prefer a 4000x but can't find one for sale at a decent price.

On my list of thing the C90 does over the C910 I also forgot to mention one
other small detail. I believe the C90 has "D.Info" mode for the display
(but I'm not 100% sure).
Anyhow what D.Info (Dual Info) mode for the display does is that in the
upper left corner of the display, when D.Info is on that part of the display
will show the time. This way you get the CD playing time on the screen and
the real time at once. The C910 displays only
"CD","CD1","CD2","CDx","MD1","MDx","FM1","AM", etc. in that area to display
the current source. With D.Info you swap out the current source indication
for the current time instead.
I'm not 100% sure if the C90 has this and if it does how it works. On most
units that had D.Info ther was only one line of display. On that line you
can either have CD Time or CD Text title or MD Time or Title or CustomFile
title. The time or source appears in the left corner depending on the
selection of D.Info. The C910 and XR-C900 had 2-line displays but no D.Info
(or CD-Text). One line was for the Custom file title and the other for CD
time, as I remember it. The left corner displayed the current source only.
There was no way to have the time and the CD-Time/CustomFile displayed
simultaneously.
If the C90 has two lines and D.Info, then you could have CD/MD Time and one
of CustomFile or CD/MD Text displayed at the same time PLUS the current time
in the corner. Is that how it is on the C90? Two lines plus D.Info? Or is
it just one line with D.Info?
Also the last little thing I noted was the A.Scrl function (only for MD
titles since the C910/XR-C900 had no CD-Text support). On the C910 the
A.Scrl (Auto Scroll) feature is pretty useless. On later units it wasn't
much better but was a LITTLE better.
On the C910 MD text titles will scroll ONCE and then stop. However it ONLY
scrolls when you MANUALLY change the track (i.e. you hit the AMS FWD/REV)!
If the track changes through normal playback, the title does NOT scroll even
with A.Scrl "ON"! With it off it NEVER scrolls automatically!
The later units (incl. C90) improved on it a BIT. The title will scroll
whenever the track changes whether it happens through the course of
listening or manually by using AMS. This is with A.Scrl on. Again, though
it only scrolls ONCE then stops. (Subsequent scrollings you have to hit
menu and then manually hit scroll.) With it off it will never scroll
automatically just like the C910.
Both are dumb because I think the text should continually scroll like it
does on Sony MD portables as well as other manufacturer's HUs with text
displays.
Oh well that's the rest of the stuff I thought of. If you think these are
"details", believe me after you use a deck every day you get to know every
little feature it has (and doesn't have) and what your "new deck" has that
the "old one" didn't and vice versa! :D

I have one, I'm not selling it, although I can give advice how I found mine. They
are extremely hard to find. They retailed for about $300 (U.S.) when they were
new. I emailed everyone on Ebay who was selling Mobile ES systems. After 2
months someone responded. I will see if I can locate one for you.

Hey now, as shameful as it is that Sony continues to make Xplod units, it
isn't necessary to try to tie them to older units like the 4000x. The X in
XDP stands for eXternal Digital Processor, not Xplod. The 210 eq was around
years before Xplod, and it's model number is XDP-210eq.

I am trying to sale my combo; it is composed of a brand new XDP-4000X (never used,
just tested) and a very well used CDX-C910 (bought it as it is and tested
it, works perfect).
I am trying to get U$S 500 for the whole package + shipment.
The only "problem" is that I live in Argentina and the shipment wouldn=B4t be the
cheapest one; also there could be some sort of import taxes for the buyer to
pay (must be found out for the buyer itself as it should be payed (in the case
is is necessary) once it gets to destiny).
If anyone is interested, please let me know.

too keen on taking that but if needs must. I am in the UK so shipping is
going to be a lot for me anyway as I can't find any forsale in the UK and will
need to go to the US anyway.
Let me know what you think. If you have MSN can we chat on that about this as

Put it this way, if you can find one in North America, it will be a definite
accomplishment!
I have seen two on eBay in all time. The first time I saw one it was pretty
banged up and sold "as-is" but it probably still worked. It went for pretty
cheap too. I don't know why I never bought it :( The other one was
recently on eBay but it was a part of a package with a HU (I think it was a
C90) and an XDP (I think it was a 210EQ) so the price was pretty up there.
The XA-U40D are pretty rare and they stopped making them a long time ago.
They never made an XA-C30"D" which is ashame, but I guess they were thinking
that not many people bought XA-U40Ds--perhaps because there weren't many
made or perhaps there weren't many made because no one wanted one. After
all, back in those days a CD changer with optical out like the CDX-91 was a
pretty penny. Even the CDX-805 carried a hefty retail when it was first
released...
As a side note, the XA-U40 (non-digital, hence no "D") was also produced as
the Blaupunkt "CDC-BRIDGE". I don't think there was ever a Blau clone to
the U40D though, because the Blau units that were UniLink based never
supported DSPs.

Actually I knew that XDP meant something like that (I was actually thinking
eXternal Data Processor), but that wasn't the "X" I was talking about!!! It
is the X at the END of 4000X! Where did THAT come from?!?
The "D" in XDP-U50D simply meant it was digital as it was either the first
or of the first full digital domain XDP units (A/D conversion not required).
The "EQ" in XDP-210EQ and XDP-766EQ means exactly that, because they also
have an EQ within them. The "X" in 4000X has no other meaning. Sony never
used it before Xplod and the majority of Xplod units have the X at the end
of the model number. That's what I was saying.

$500 US is a pretty decent deal for a brand new XDP-4kX, IMO and including
the CDX-C910 at the same price is like a bonus...
I guess there is the extra shipping and possible duties/taxes but the good
price might make up for it.
Personally, I'm not looking to buy a 4000X right now, but if I were I'd be
looking into the shipping costs and possible duties!

Yeah, I got that point after I finished the email. First of all, we all
know that the 4000x is not an Xplod original. It was made way before the
Xplod campaign was even dreamt of in a nightmare. Lets take a look at the
model XDP-210EQ. The XDP portion is pretty self explanatory, the 210 mainly
being noted as identification of the model, and the EQ portion designating
that it is in fact an EQ. Now, looking at the XDP-4000X I see the same XDP
notation that it is an external digital processor, the 4000 signifying the
model, and as carefully as I look at the X, I'd have to say that it
signifies possibly that it is a crossover, which a large part of it is, a 4
channel one. It's just common sense that the final X in the model number
was not placed there to signify any ties or relation to the Xplod family.
If it had, the 4000X would probably have never even been thought of, or ever
produced, since we all know of the level of quality of all Xplod, (non ES)
units. Crap, all cheap crap. Anyone else have any ideas, I don't even like
to think of my 4000x having any ties to the Xplod family other than the
color of the box, and that's hard enough to deal with in the first place. I
know where the 4000x came from, it was from the engineers of the original
Elevated Standard line of products. What was Sony thinking?!!

It's not too bad of a deal at all, including a working c910, but then again
Shipping and Customs charges would probably put away any option of most
people acting on this deal. I know that I paid $500.00 for my 4000x off of
Ebay, and the unit was brand new with warranty, Shipping was $15.00.
Unfortunately, unless someone interested lives a little closer to South
America, or plans on taking a trip, it probably isn't the best deal out
there. But, I know when I found my 4000x on Ebay, I was having a hell of a
time finding one anywhere, I would've paid the full $1200.00 for it, and I
was ready to in my bidding too! Guess I got lucky!

I am planning on selling my 4000x, C-90, XA-300 adapter, and 10 disc changer
(I forget the changer model, but it is the last mobile es changer with
digital output). If anyone is interested in buying these IN COMBINATION, I
would love to talk to you. I also will include an additional optical
connector (FOR THE BACK OF THE C-90), 1 digital cable, the original boxes
and manuals, the original DSC program on data disk, and a 20 ft. serial
cable (sorry no laptop). I will sell this for $2000.00 even. And I can't
go any lower. If interested, call me at 561 379-5336. I thought I would
throw this out there to you guys before ebay. The only reason I'm selling
this is because I am getting the Alpine F1 staus processor and HU
