If you are buying a laptop solely for use with the xdp4k, get an OLD, cheap one. like, something that was made during the vintage of windows 95. I tried all sorts to get them to communicate, even tried sticking the serial D9 plug into the monitor out on the laptop (ive learned i bit more about computers now) Clem Gaming galore at <a href="http://g.msn.com/8HMQENNZ/2731??PS=">XtraMSN Gaming!

--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: "David Kennedy" <dkenned1@hotmail.com> Just get something simple like a pentium 133. I reccomend any of the IBM thinkpad series, say 560's, 570's, 760's, 770 or the newer 240 (small & light!!) can usually be had cheaply on e-bay. Or the toshiba libretto, any of those old laptops are fine. I think mine is a 560x or something like that. I found this on there right now: Ebay item # 3416438362 - right now at $152.50 for a 240x http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3416438362&category=31552 and here's is a 560 for $135 buy it now - # 34166980 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3416698042&category=42202 >From: justinjbaron@attbi.com >Reply-To: xdp4000x-list@matronics.com >To: xdp4000x-list@matronics.com >Subject: Re: XDP4000X-List: potrs for conection >Date: Mon, 19 May 2003 16:33:29 +0000 > >--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: justinjbaron@attbi.com > >TIm, > >If you had a computer with no serial port, but with USB, you could >theoretically buy a USB->serial adapter cable and use software to emulate >the >serial "port". > >If you are buying a laptop solely for use with the xdp4k, get an OLD, cheap >one. like, something that was made during the vintage of windows 95. > >Good luck > > --> XDP4000X-List message posted by: Sqxpert@aol.com > > > > well, now im getting confused now! > > the regular conection is serial , to serial, right? > > > > but then , you can get a usb to serial contion also , right? > > > > thanks for your guys time! > > > > > > tim koehle > > > > >

--> XDP4000X-List message posted by: Bobby Braun <BobbyBraun@comcast.net> Ok, now ask yourself why should you waste the money on such a cheap computer to solely use for your 4000x? At least I thought it pretty worthless to have to buy a cheap laptop just to run my 4000x. I already shell'd out enough money for my car stereo alone! You can still get yourself a decent computer out of the deal, and be able to tweak your settings... The serial 'com' port is not yet obsolete, and laptops are readily available through Gateway, Dell, even Compaq or other common brands at your local electronics store. I just bought my laptop a few months ago. And it by no means is just a pentium 133, it's running windows XP, and in fact, the laptop is so much more powerful than my desktop computer, I've stopped using my old computer altogether! I do recommend ordering or purchasing a laptop with a serial port already installed, even though you could use any communication port to control the 4000x. The important part your need to keep in mind is that the serial connection needs to keep it's 'null' status. Also, all this talk about using USB, it'd be much easier to convert a parallel 'Printer' port, still standard on most all computers to date, to accomodate the 4000x. Theoretically, yes it is possible to use USB, but third generation software would be necessary, since USB is plug and play 'only' in nature. And I couldn't tell you where to start to look for something like that. It's your call, but you're not out of luck in finding a laptop with a serial port. Gateway, or Dell should be able to build your own computer for what you need it for, just specify that you need the Serial port. Hope that helps... Thats the LPT1 printer port you're talking about right? So if this is possible.......how is it done? Clem and friends overseas!
